| What DVD Media do you use? -
01-17-05
Ok, much like the thread for CD-R media I have in the music forum, I also want to know what brand of DVD media you use, and to elaborate a little more as the quality here is much more important. It is an ongoing thing with media, never knowing what to buy, especially since the market has been flooded with NO NAME brands. That is what I generally used in the past for CD-R as I didnt really care much for the quality, mostly burned to play in my car. However, now that 1.5 years has passed since I burned my first spindle of 50 PINE brand, and none of them will play today, I know what brand not to buy.
I have not really bought NO NAME DVD media after learning from my experiences with CD media that some just don't last much longer than a year. I have only used Memorex, which may as well be a no name, but never had any duds, and PRO DISC (believed to be one of the best there is). Alot of ppl are fooled by the "quality" of media by thinking because they just burned a spindle of 100 and got no coasters, they must be good(RITEK is a good example here, one of the worst quality media you can buy, but everyone thinks its the best because of thier coaster rate). This is the biggest mistake they make. Who cares if you burned 100 discs with no errors if none of them will play in a year, especially if you are using them for family videos/photos, data, or anything you want to keep for years. It really is difficult to know what to buy. I will continue buying PRO DISC for now as they seem to be very good, and have passed the age test, and been highly graded by Pioneer labs recently.
Ok, of the million brands of DVD-R discs on the market, which ones have you used, and which ones have you had the best success with? or for that matter, do you use DVD+R?

My dad uses Maxell DVD media, got a few coasters out of 25, and are very expensive here, but as long as they last, that is all that matters. Maxell were not rated one of the better ones in this catagory, but not the worst either, they were rated average. For thier price, I would expect better. PRO DISC is much cheaper, and rated so much higher. I do still stand by the Maxell name though.

I sell them, and customers love them, and at $28 cdn. for a spindle of 50 inkjet printable that is good. There is not much info out there on testing of this brand in particular, but I know PRO DISC to be a very good company in optical data and storage equipment and media, so I trust them. They are also teaming up with 3M who are rated to have some of the best out there as well. When I buy DVD media, I buy it to last, I don't care about a few coasters.

We don't have it in Greece though. So the net is going to be useful once again. I want to live in a world of peace

Yeah I guess the net always comes in handy when you cannot buy something where you live, that is the only time I buy online, I know alot of ppl who do it just to save a few bucks, but in the end, it costs them alot more than they would have saved.

I just picked up some Fuji DVD-R 50pk.(Made in Japan version) and just scanned them. They are TYG02 (Taiyo Yuden) these are the best you can get period. Best Buy had them on half price $25. Kickass deal. I previously got some Fuji (Made in Taiwan version) these are made by ProDisc, also pretty good.

so far the only ones i have used are from Kodak and I am not sure who the manufacturer is at the moment. when i get home I will test a couple and then check them out and see. You can look at it as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of human life, or just chalk it up to my being a sick, bloodthirsty monster. Either way, it's all the same.
