My ancient Alcatel Speedtouch HOME (Its hacked to a PRO version though) is dropping out frequently so i guess it finally reached the end of its life...

Anyone can offer some advice for a decent (and affordable) replacement?

Let me guess. everyone uses Cable or Dail up here?

I use sbc. The connection is fast when I come in through aol (of all things?!) but when I use the yahoo sbc browser it's as slow as dial up... soooo... I really don't know... though I'd suggest not going with sbc for now.

Yes I use cable. I used DSL until I just got sick of it. Cable is alot faster with a more reliable connection.

Not in this country... The cable networks are owned by 2 corperation (UPC and Casema) and both have a crap service and an unreliable connection for too much money.
So here DSL is basicly your only option for a fast and steady connection.

I've never had an issue with my DSL connection bro, and it is faster then my landlords cable internet. so....

That sucks. Because with a good cable connection I get 3.0Mb/s++ and with DSL I was getting .75-1.25Mb/s.

And Qwest our local DSL provider had DF here blocked even though they swore up and down it had nothing to do with them. So it is just qwest probably that sucks.

your problem isn't the modem, it's DSL. (don't get me started)

must be the states then bro. I have a DSL connection that gives me 3MB/s and I can up it to 5 MB/s

Or the Western part of it. Cable so far has seen a max of 5.5Mb/s with an average of about 3.0Mb/s. With my DSL I only ever saw a high of about 1.25Mb/s.

i saw i afordable D-Link modem. if it sucks i'll just trade it in and invest some more cash in a Netgear.

As for the DSL vs Cable discussion, it depends where you life. if the Cable network sucks in your area, you want DSL. if the DSL network sucks in your area, you want cable. simple as that

if both are good i choose cable.

Id take Glassfiber internet. Too bad they only just begun building the network and its still way too expensive.
