My father is lookign for a USB style router and i am not to sure on what type of router to look for or what would be the best for him to connect to comps to the internet. any help would be appreciated

I know you have USB modems, but routers... I doubt it. Routers are network devices that have no relation with the USB port. Most often they have only ethernet support...

What your father wants is to share an internet connection with multiple comps?

yup, and since most of our dsl modems now are USB style he's looking to keep it at that. would he be better to just get a USB hub and leave it at that?

Err... USB hubs connect multiple devices to one PC, not multiple PC's to one USB device. What you desire cannot be done...

What you CAN do, is build a software router. IE: use one PC to do your routing. (And put a firewall on it while at it).
Either that, or you'll need an ethernet router, or a router with DSL capabilities built-in. (The latter is prolly the best if no DSL modem has been bought yet).

USB is not intended for wide-area networking, but for connecting input/output devices to the computer...

USB routers do apparently exsist. You can network your systems through USB. I had ppl asking me for these, and we were discussing them recently

Yes, but those are to connect multiple PC's to a single network device. Basically nothing more then a couple of USB NIC's interconnected. What Crypt wanted to do was share a single USB device (the modem) with 2 computers. And that is never going to work...

If it's only two computers he could only use the network cards and a simple lan cable and enable internet sharing?

i know how to network two computers people, it was just i was asked it=f it was possible to use a USB device to do it. since i do not know much about USB, i figured i would ask. For your information I am an IT manager for a GM dealership in Canada, so i should and have proven to have knowledge enough to run a networked computer system.

Well then, to finish this thread you should take a look at Cisco's routers, I am sure you will find Routers that can connect to your computer through USB.
