How the hell do I overclock on XP? I got an AMD Athlon at 1.5Gigs and a Asus motherboard. Plus Geforce 2 32. 256RAM. DDR.

Well, first of all, it is not recommended to OC because you lose warranty on your system. So be careful... Also, if you OC the CPU will get hotter. More cooling needed. But if you want to go ahead...

There are 2 ways to OC the XP... Either by unlocking the CPU clock multiplier or by increasing the FSB (front side bus). Increasing the FSB speed will increase the clock on your mainboard, making all devices run faster (memory, CPU, vidcard). Everything runs above specs, so generally this will produce "hangs" real fast. Still, since it is a BIOS setting, it is the easiest way to OC. And if it proves unstable, clearing the BIOS will return the system to default speed.

The second method requires altering your CPU a bit. By making some connections on your CPU, you allow yourself to set the CPU's multiplier (FSB * Multiplier = CPU speed) to any desired value. Since this is a physical modification, all warranty on that CPU is void. I'll not go in detail about that, search for it on Google, plenty of sites cover it.

even with our system designed with the hopes of overclocking did not work...it got to a point where it would lock up and we'd have to wait until it cooled down...and then only a few moments before it would lock again...almost melted something on the motherboard...but that's my brother in laws realm...

As I said, OC'd PC's get hotter. Need better cooling... Diehard overclockers use liquid cooling... Water, or for the kamikaze overclockers: Liquid nitrogen

Well... you could a get a Geforce gaming sysytem which automatically comes with insane cooling on it.
