i need to ask if anyone has any idea how to fix xp so i can run dos games. mostly i cant play my beloved duke nukem 3d, or even FFVII, GTA-L or GTA2, Sentient, EF2k, and im really bugged by it.

can anyone help?

Most of these games are simply incompatible with the NT5 kernel coding. The NT5 kernel prevents direct access to hardware, games require it... Installing Service Pack 1 may help a bit. I hear there is improved compatibility with it...

In any event, you can always try and boot with a bootfloppy, into DOS... Load the correct drivers, and use the command prompt to start the game. The games you mention were meant to run under DOS anyway if I recall corectly.

you could try running those games in compatibility mode. Just right-click the executable and choose win98. Most of the games you mentioned need DOS which was in win95-winME.

Let me know if you need more help. If you go into raw DOS mode, you will need to load additional drivers for your soundcard and mouse on the bootdisk if you want them to work.

speaking of games...and windows xp...i'm trying to play dungeon keeper two..and just as it starts to get good...it kicks back to the desktop...i have nothing else running, my resources are good and i am beyond the minimum requirements...heck...i wasn't even connected to the internet

windows xp is the first real actual operating system since dos. it doesnt run over dos.

dos games wont work on windows xp as there is no dos to run from. ok it has dos prompt, and can sometimes fool games into thinking dos is present but real old dos games dont work.

therefore i cant play most my games including the most amazing 7th guest which i am real sad about.

Windows NT, and 2K (the systems XP is based on) were real OS's too ye know

And there is an option to make your system dualboot... You can use Windows 98 SE for DOS-based games, and XP for all else. Drawback: Uses some 300-600MB extra diskspace for the '98 install.

xp is classed as NT. for some reason.....
ah well.

i knew about dual op systems, but i cant be arsed to do that. and i dont have nuff hdd space. i use all it up on music.
