Ok...things has happened to my computer again...now the cd-rom won't work, apparently some malevolent demon has convinced it it's a dvd player, so it's attempting to use the dvd drives...only we don't have a dvd player on the computer...

and because of this, I can't install my precious Sims unleashed...ack!

You promised me the ending would be clear
You'd let me know when the time was now
Don't let me know when you're opening the door
Stab me in the dark, let me disappear

Try and removing the device from your Windows System Properties/Device manager. Catch me on ICQ and I'll talk you trough things...

Strangely, having it recognised as a DVD instead of a CDR player should not affect preformance...

Yeah, I've got XP...I'm not sure what happened to the cd player, but my better half insists its using the wrongdrives, so...

It won't run cd's at all, that's all I know...spins a few rounds, then stops and insists its empty...

Sounds like a hardware failure. Nothing you can do about that if so. Try the CD in another computer, if it works there, replace the broken CD drive...

Does it really spin? check if the CD looks like its in a different position after you close and open it. If it doesn't move at all then the little ribbon thingy has broken. Usually thats repairable but these days a CDROM drive costs almost nothing... so yea.. get a new one.

Why do you think its turned into a DVDROM drive?

The CD spin motor is directly connected to the clamp that holds the CD... There is no ribbon in use there.
