No, I'm not doing that at all. Some popular music is good and some is bad, just like all forms of music. But liking a band that's popular dont' immediatly make you some sort of sellout.

well I'm into 80's metal. NWOBHM bands like old Maiden, Angelwitch, Satan, Gargoyle etc. I also like bands like the old Manowar, Helloween, Manilla road, Helstar, Agent Steel, Cirith Ungol, Brocas Helm, Heavy Load, Attack etc. From new bands I like Iced Earth, Blind Guardian, Chroming Rose, Twisted tower, Lord Weird, Primal Fear, Exciter, Gammaray and stuff.

Commercial music SUCKS because it is designed to be popular with people that DON'T the fuck know anything about music...pop songs are not composed musical pieces, they are constructed objects...Is it any wonder that half of the lyrics in commercial songs say 'I love you' and 'Don't leave me'? The masses that don't know about music want to listen all the time to cheesy love songs...If you put them something of more quality like Nevermore's Dreaming Neon Black, which is melodic with though-provoking lyrics they'll say 'Too depressing'...well that's all, fuck pop music...it is the scourge of the musical industry led by white-collar cock suckers that don't know how a guitar looks like...
For those that don't agree, go listen to your latest Madonna or Britney Spears or Boyzone or Slipknot or whatever shit just don't try to come above us that are underground. YOU know it we are better.

So in other words you say that every single band that acchieves any recognition must inherently fit your description of "commercial music". So you're saying that all music has to be totally unknown to be good, and that any band that is known must be manufactured. Which is why you're an idiot and I objected to your post in the first place, since I knew very well that this is what you were trying to say. I know it's typical of whining angst-ridden teenagers in garage bands incapable of playing an instrument decently or going outside without a pound of spikes in your clothing to defend all the loud wailing bullshit they listen to by calling it "wicked underground" and accusing everything that's not unpopular like themselves to be sellouts, but try to keep the volume to a minimum when expounding on your idiocy.

ARRGHHH!!! Therein lies the fucking problem! People will dis anyone for 'selling out' and being on MTV, and then turn and fucking complain that they never show any good videos on MTV! Does anyone else see how this snowball effect might end up burying you, the consumer?

Instead of bitching about what's on MTV, stop supporting it either positivly or negatively! do more for the music you love, get yourself a band together, make the music you would want to listen to, and take a step to uproot the tepid music industry. Or if you can't play or sing or just don't want to, then do more to support your local scene, get in contact with your favorite bands, find ways to promote them, do some street team work for them, go to shows, request more shit at clubs and encourage others to do the same!

I'm tired of people saying MTV/the music industry/some genre/the scene/ is going to shit and don't do a goddamn thing other than complain. Make it work! MTV was cool once, that was the POINT, it can be good again! It'll take more than just sitting around and making contradictory complaints! Think about it:

We can all agree Limp Bizkit and Slipknot are queer. Not only because they're on MTV, but because they suck... NOW, even though they suck and WE know it, they're the ones on MTV, gaining exposure, and encouraging others to emulate. And so we, as underground snots, sit in our rooms and bitch about how shitty MTV is, and hoard our special pretentious cd collection... we will actually discourage others from listening to the music we love because we don't deem them worthy? So the bands we love stay working day jobs at Kinko's because they've only sold a 100 copies of their new album since it came out 4 months ago, while those in the mainstream with nonstop exposure are using caviar as sexual lubrication with several expensive prostitutes. it's a continuous cycle, and it's perpetuated by ordinary music fans who say pretentious things like "real metal bands are not allowed to get mentioned on mtv ." I know people like to claim nothing is their fault, but everyone has the power to change things.

I don't see what the point is whether something's "commercial" or not. I mean, if music's good, I'm gonna listen to it whether it's mainstream or not.

You know, in the past (60's to 80's) good music was successful...what was considered 'POP' then, mighty bands like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, Metallica, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Yes etc. now is considered classic...But the musical tastes of the public have evolved...downwards...now the public doesn't want complex, technical hard or heavy or technical music...today the public likes beats...no melody, no technique...no musicianship...now most of the commercial music is generated by computers...no guitars, drums and bass. There is good rock & metal music currently (I am not talking about extreme metal, I am talking about Metallica stule), but the public doesn't care anymore not because it isn't good, but because it isn't 'trendy'. About the whole commercial music thing, i agree with Dark Messiah b/c you cant say that a band is not good just because they are popular, the most important thing about music is that it effects you. Whether that music calms you down or hypes you up its more about the reaction than how well-known they are. Its also undeniable that some commercial music is manufactured to make money (i.e. o-town, dont even get me started on the making the band theme) But the most important thing is the music, true the Deftones are on Mtv sometimes, but that doesnt make them any worse than underground bands who havent gotten the recognition that they deserve. Id rather my band become popular and have people say that we sold out, but still be able to reach millions more people and maybe save someones life, than to be forever playing shows to 50 or 60 people and never getting anywhere or helping anyone. Its not a myth that music can help someone who is not okay, if anything im a living testament to that, so it shouldnt matter how much $$ they make, but how good they are and how meaningful they are.

Ahh, just to adress this matter: I was not stereotyping garage bands in general, I was saying that the idiot (also known as Vlad) was probably jealous of any band with any amount of popularity due to the fact that he's doubtless in some "wicked underground" band with no talent. I happen to be a great fan of a number of unknown and/or garage bands, I was merely insulting Vlad, so don't take it the wrong way.
