Yeah, that's a pretty ridiculous list. I have a feeling that sixxx started this thread just to show that he really hates bands that are considered legendary by lots and lots of people. I'm a huge Zep fan, for instance, but I hate The Stones. However, just because I hate the Stones doesn't mean they're one of the 5 worst bands of all time. To me a band that bad would have to be abysmal on so many levels that you could barely call them a band: no musical ability, no songwriting ability, no lyrical ability, no thing. Led Zeppelin, while not loved by all, were unarguably talented in terms of musicianship, and not just individually; they worked well together. And while I don't like Metallica anymore, the same can be said for them; they have real music ability.

Here are my five worst bands, using my [more mature] criteria:

1) The Monkees
2) Elton John (ONLY because he doesn't write his own lyrics, and I hate that so much)
Crazy Town
4) Wham!
5) Lil' Jon, and anything he's ever touched.

No but seriously, I truly do despise The Beatles and Zepplin. In fact, there's very few bands of that era I can stand.

As for Creed, Limp Bizkit, and Metallica...those are all legitimate. I was once an extreme Metalli-head, with all their albums, imports, videos, a box set, books, etc. etc. etc. etc. But why I think they're one of the worst bands? MARKETING!!!! They fucked up! You don't attack Napster, you find a way to make it work and make more money! Simple marketing strategies! Like Tool's new album...how do you get kids to buy it, make a fun CD insert they'll enjoy!

Oh, and actually, now that I've gone back and listened to Metallica, they really do suck. MASTER OF PUPPETS is still good, but everything else they did...musically, lyrically, SUX ASS!

Now, the last on the list might stir some folks, but it's a legitimate addition to my list. Kurt Cobain would not be considered any sort of genius if he were still alive. The music was lame, the lyrics were pointless, and they are overrated beyond belief. Gah.

Firewall, you have absolutely no way to prove that, thereby making your definition of "legitimate" synonymous with "opinion." If that's the case, then I agree; it is your opinion. Besides anyone who uses "overrated" in their explanation is usually not very credible.

However, I do agree with HIM. They're awful.

Overrated is a perfectly acceptable comment. The Beatles are overrated, Nirvana is definitely overrated. I too would put Nirvana in my top 5, if it weren't full of Rush and 311.

As for what I hate about Rush, yes, its 99% the vocals. Geddy Lee makes me want to kill babies. For the first 19 years of my life I thought he was a chick. Though the rest of the music does little for me either. Math Rock just isn't my thing.

And Dyshade: I'll agree on the Madonna thing, her early stuff was really good pop music. But so was MJ's in my opinion.

And my whole thing about "overrated" is that it means nothing simply because it can mean anything to anyone. It has no concrete evidence; the opposite would be calling a band something like "atonal."

Okay, I get your point. That's fair.

My use of the word overrated came from a few things....

1) Because of Nirvana, we have to be fed things about Mr Cobain being a genius, which he wasn't.

2) Nirvana changed music, some might say for the better, I don't really know, but because of them, we have numerous post-grunge radio rock bands with angst music and ridiculous lyrics all over the place.

Alice In Chains were a great band, their music made more sense, and Layne Staley was a great writer and musician.......yet theyre hardly mentioned. Nirvana are overrated because of how many other great bands being ignored.

Nirvana had one album that changed everything: Nevermind. Their subsequent album was nothing special at all. All of AICs music was top quality and enduring.

Nirvana gets the credit because of that one landmark album (and lets face it, the album only had 1 or 2 landmark songs on it), followed by Cobain's landmark suicide. Had Cobain never shot himself, Nirvana would likely not have all of the credit for creating Alternative music.

And thats pretty much what overrated is, getting a lot of credit that isn't deserved.
