Just curious to see who besides me writes songs here. I saw that thread by IntenseIntent and I started wondering. What type of music do you generally write? What instruments do you play with it?

I write songs.... but I don't have an instrument... I just write the words.. like a longer poem... but it would usually be a song for pop music.... I don't know why, but it is what I hear most on the radio so that is what I write.

i've written a few songs myself, but they've been shelved for some time. but this post isn't about me. it's about a songwriter who i admire greatly. recently, i found out that stuart adamson, lead singer of the 80's scottish band big country(remember they had that song "in a big country"?), died of a apparent suicide. at first, i had been hearing this name all day that it was announced, and i couldn't quite place the name with the face. but then i found out exactly who it was, and didn't move for a good 30 minutes. i was very young when the song came out, but it has stuck with me for the past 20 years. it's a song about not giving up hope, and the uplifting background tune furthers that feeling. it was clear to me that adamson wanted out. he was a heavy drinker who had disappeared a month before his death. not even his own music could save him. news of stuart adamson's death will fade fast, i'm sure, since he hasn't had a hit record in 20 years, but i won't forget him.

well mine i write for guitar and piano, so they are kinda dark and sad...

I can relate there...I write for keyboard/synths/piano and mine are mostly ballads and dark or sad as well.

I write songs.. if you look at my thread "songs of a misspent youth" it has all my songs on it.. they are mostly heavy metal I play guitar but I can't write music for them.. I am not that good..

I write all the material for my band "Shadow Government", and it is all put to industrial-sounding music. I do not play an instrument, as I am far too busy throwing objects, setting fires, and generally committing grevious acts of bodily harm to myself while I am onstage.

i like to write the music and then convert some of my poems and merge them into songs....i play bass.

my favourite songwriter/lyricist at the moment has to be either serj tankian or darron malakian (both from soad) i think their songs are beautiful like "spiders" on the first album..... is just so emotional and i cant explain it

I write either heavy metal or 'classical' style music. I have yet to combine the two, but I'll try one of these days.

i do as well, ive been writing them for four years now, i hope to one day record the,.

i write songs for my band as well....."Moonset." I HATE THE NAME.........so dont say anything about the name....

anyhow...back to the topic. I write the songs...and play bass. I usually write the music with my guitarist.....record it WITHOUT vocals and then write music and try and match it up to it. BUT i also write songs BEFORE the music...and leave him to write music to the words.

Our music is "Pumpkiny." Kinda like "The Smashing Pumpkins." One REAL heavy and dark song....then the next song is sad and depressing.

I usually also DIRECT the music. Such as....telling who to do what. as in: "Okay....NOW do the fill-in."

I write songs about hacking up your ex girlfriend AND her new boyfriend that are actually very pretty! LOL! The line up in my band is vocals and acoustic guitar (that's me), violin, cello, bass and drums... so we have a sort of gypsy, old world sound and the melodies are really sweet. But when it comes to writing lyrics I like to write about things that EVERYONE feels but no one likes to talk about..... like when you run into your Ex and all you can do is think of a million different ways to butcher her! ; ) But I always make it a point to include in the lyrics something like "I know myself too well, I don't have the courage to carry out my dreams..." because I believe in being honest in the lyrics. Yes, I HONESTLY want to hack her up! But I also honestly know that I would never do it.
I also write a lot of satire and dark satyrical stuff. I have two CDs out on Projekt at the moment and a 3rd on the way. The first one The Devil's Bris is VERY gypsy, pirate, vampire type music with lots of funny and twisted lyrics. I think the best song on that CD is When You're Evil which is a parody of people who think they are really evil but they are really just mildly irritating! LOL!
On my second CD Almost Human I like Dead Girls (about dating the deceaced!) and The Headless Waltz (about cutting off people's heads...including your own. ; )
I am now working on the 3rd CD called Boo Hoo. It should be out in Feb 2002.
It's a break up record!!!! so there's going to be a lot of whining and calling for the head of a certain un-named individual on that one! LOL!!!
