Of COURSE there are similarities between MegadetH and Metallica.... Dave Mustaine WAS Metallica. The only reason their music changed after Justice was because they ran out of Dave's stuff.

I don't want to get all technical, fr0g, because you're a cool guy, but I have to. Metallica changed from Kill Em All to Lightning. Stayed in that groove with Master, but Justice sounds different from all their previous stuff. You can probably attribute Justice more to Burton's death than to Mustaine. He wrote some or all of Leper Messiah, Call of Ktulu, Jump in the Fire (notice they never play that live, also notice on the boxed set video Lars remarks after James plays the opening riff "James didn't write that"), Mechanix which later became the Four Horsemen (they have to cut out the middle quiet section when they play it live), Metal Melitia and perhaps one or two I missed. WHile Mustaine is cooler than Hammet (although, so am I), his leaving didn't change the bands sound as obviously as Burton's death. That said, Rust in Peace is so much better than Justice (I think they're from around the same year).
Why isn't Testament listed in your classic thrash bands? They are better than all three of these bands now. Fucking your mother doesn't make me any less of a HOMO.

Greg Christian on bass
replaced by Derrick Ramirez
now Steve DiGiorgio
Loius Clemente on drums
replaced by John Tempesta

then Gene Hoglan

at least mortification have one more original member than napalm death do. none of the normal line up are in that band now. about 16 people have been in that band. the first 4 albums have changing line-ups.

Testaments original line up lasted for five albums. But they are almost parallel to Metallica's trends. The fifth Testament album is their black album. Three out of five decided that being heavy was cooler than selling out, so they fought about it and Skolnick (who is actually famous) and Clemente (who isn't) left (Skolnick plays jazz now). Then they made a heavier album with the guy from White Zombie on drums (Tempesta) and Murphey (from Death and other death metal acts), but neither had agreed to stay as members. So then Atlantic drops Testament and the band doesn't take it well. At first they change their name to Dog Faced Gods (the original, the other is most likely named after Testament) for legal purposes because Atlantic wants to keep the name Testament for themselves. Atlantic doesn't get the rights to it, though, so they change back to Testament and release their heaviest album to date, Demonic. They get Ramirez, who is Petersons cousin to fill in on bass and Gene Hogland (famous) to play on the album. Again, these guys never agreed to stay permanently. Testaments newest album is called the Gathering becsause they found a bunch of really talented musicians, namely Lombardo (you should know who this is), Murphey (again) and DiGiorgio (famous). The all star line up is more for recording than anything, so they quickly disband and Testament finds a bunch of guys named Steve to fill in. (At one point, three of the five guys were named Steve) It looks like Billy, Peterson and DiGiorgio are now permament, but Murphey will probably come back just for recording of the next album.
Now thatI've completed a history that no one cares about...I did leave some stuff out, so just ask and I'll fill in the details, hehe. Fucking your mother doesn't make me any less of a HOMO.

Since you talk about bands with unstable line-ups, I would like to mention Deicide. They are around for 10 years and they have the same line-up without any changes...

I met Megadeth a couple years ago. Unfortunately they didn't have Nick with them, it was the drummer from Suicidal Tendencies taking his place (I forget his name). They were all pretty cool, (even though all of them but Dave chopped off their hair!) but they all looked like they were on something.

Jimmy Degrasso, and even though I loved Nick... I think Jimmy is an ample replacement. He played a little solo at the last concert I saw him do with them, and he rocked balls. Marty has also since left the band, not sure who his replacement was though. Such is the way of MegadetH, new members every couple of years... but the Daves stay the same.
I met em too... nice guys.

If you want some serious thrash, check out Exodus- "Another Lesson In Violence", S.O.D.- "Bigger Than The Devil", or Overkill- "From The Underground And Below".

Metallica songs were much more intelligtent and musically better. As for Dave being the inspiration of Metallica, I doubt it. Megadeth's music is much happier than Metallica's.

i don't know how old this thread is but i can talk about slayer. I'd have to say they are one of the best, heaviest bands in the world now besides pantera. as for being similar, they are all good musicians, no doubt, but the lyrics of slayer really don't have much in common with metallic or megadeth. cept maybe songs like "creeping death" and "mandatory suicide" Life knocks me down everytime i try to get up
I never smile cause i never have a reason too
all i want in life it to be happy - korn
i'd kill myself for you. i'd kill you for myself -pantera

While I'll agree that Slayer are still one of the best thrash metal outfits in the world, Pantera is now and has always been one of the weakest heavy bands in existance. They used to be hair metal for god's sake, and still would be if they had sold more than 10 albums. (not that there's anything wrong with hair metal, i'm a rabid glam fan) If you truly want heavy, rip your spine out metal, the only place to go is the Necropolis Records catalouge. Bands like Testament, Pissing Razors, Deathwitch, and Hipocracy, are heavy enough to make your ears bleed. Not to mention Mortician, these guys play "we sold our souls to play this fast" metal. Topping out around 300 beats a minute, this group is the fastest, most brutal thing out there, though their lyrics leave something to be desired; not that that really matters, as the lead singer is totally unintelligable. Slayer and old Metallica will always have a place in my record collection, but Dave Mustain is too damned high pitched, and nasal for my taste. Though the night be dark, the dawn shall yet come to awaken and annoy you.
"Still the morning is preordained / But I believe light is the source of all our pain / It reveals the smallest sin / But dark covers all and will always take you in"
"With the darkness the night forgives / Covers our scars and lets the lost souls live"
"Armed and gunnin' / I'll be runnin' / Always just before the day / In the distance day is dawning / But I'm already miles away"
Savatage - "Miles Away"
If stupidity were fatal, the world would be a much less crowded place.
