There's nothing like seeing an opening band getting just completely berated.
I went to see Tool last year and they had this band Cortizone open for them. They were a half decent band but I think anyone opening for tool is going to get a hard time.
About 2 songs into they're set they had not got a single response from the crowd, everyone was just dead still.
Anyways, aside from the usual "you suck" and "get off" they got ~

Lead singer ~ "a free t-shirt to whoever headbangs the hardest to the next song".
Guy in crowd after said song ~ " the bass player, give it to the bass player.
Guy in crowd after another song ~ how many t-shirts does the bass player want"
Lead singer ~ "looks like we've got a comedian in the crowd".
Guy in crowd ~ "yeah and we've got three comedians on stage".

They're was so many more but I can't remember them all, it was too funny.

What's the worst you guys have seen?

When Orgy played at the first Family Values, before anyone had really heard of them. The crowd looked like it was frozen in time, and people were throwing full bottles of water at Jay. They sounded pretty good though, so it wasn't on account of their playing

when i went to go see red hot chili peppers the "foo fighters" opened for them. this was a couple years ago about when the song "learn to fly" came out so the audience was completely dead. but poor Dave Grohl, he was trying so hard, running around and even giving away better seats. but no one really got into them (accept when dave got on the drum set, that was actually pretty awesome).

It's kind of sad when it's a good band playing.
I saw Monkeywrench(Mark Arm of Mudhoney's side project)open for Pearl Jam and the crowd were just plain ignorant. They're such a kick ass group too. No-one payed any attention at all, I think me and the few people I was with were the only ones actually cheering them on.

the same thing happened when a friend of mine went to see KoRn (blah) and Mindless Self Indulgence opened for them, MSI fucking rocks much harder than KoRn....ahg......

Pattonm's group Fantomas opening for tool..truthfully, even *I* hated em then, I had a headache, my girlfriend at the time was being real odd and I jsut wasn't feeling it..hated tool that night, too, though..but this guy behind us kept screaming about satan in like arabic so I was screaming back at him in german..Fantomas were REALLY weird, though. I went home and within a week had two of thier cds hehe...i hatd it live but I couldn t stop thinking about it and the cds rocked.

Fantomas kicks ass. I love their stuff . Very weird, yes, but that's Patton for ya. Mr. Bungle wasn't exactly normal.

Oh, I love the stuff now, I think I was just NOT in the mindframe for anything different that night. Truth be told, I wasnt even that excited about Tool, especially half way through. I about left, tha'ts how horrible I thought their set was. 2 old songs, stinkfist and aenema....2! In like 2 hours on stage.

Yeah I kind of felt the same when I last saw Tool.
The only tracks they did from Undertow were Prison Sex and Sober, I was really hoping for 4 Degrees and some of the others.
And tracks from Opiate were a no show aswell, which is a shame as some of those tracks are they're most strongest.
But then again it was Tool, so really I should have no right to bitch.

there was this opener named Icon of Coil... a)they welcomed us as if we were in a city 1500 miles away (seen the comercial "dude, houston was last night"?)... b)they were SO fucking loud and so fucking terrible that the main event was delayed a half hour after they left because everyone was deaf and pissed... c) they had NO real talent other than pumping bass and screaming into the mike

every open ive seen has DESERVED their abuse...

Icon of Coil have tightened up alot, I saw them last year and they were decent. PLus..you gotta give opening bands a little bit of a break, alot of bands use the opener's to tweak tech and the such.

This plant grows slooowly, but it grows. I go to general and get confused becuase theres so many topics! where do I start!

i saw icon this past december... their entire set was horrible... im just glad VNV came out and did their damnedest to make us forget... what a great band...
