layne staley, frontman for alice in chains, was found dead in his seattle home friday evening. the cause of death is not known at this time, but is presumed to be linked to his heavy drug use. police were called to his house to check on his well being and found his body which they speculate had been there for several days. this definitely puts a damper on all alice in chains' fans (myself included) hopes that any future albums would be released. alice in chains is one of those bands that has such a unique style it instantly grabs you and sucks you in. although jerry cantrell remains alive, i don't think that the edge and harmony that layne staley brought to the group could ever be recreated. i don't get effected too often when musicians die or fade out, but staley's death really struck a chord in me. maybe it's because alice in chains was one of the first bands to make me really appreciate what music could be or maybe it's because alice in chains was one of the first bands that made me want to pick up a guitar... either way i'm deeply saddened to hear this news. to quote staley from the album dirt:

Damn, this SUCKS. Alice in Chains has always been one of my all-time favorite bands. Layne's death was most likely because of heroin; he already had to have a hand amputated because the needles destroyed the circulation there..

Completly shocked, just found out now, i feel absolutely numb.
Still can't believe it.

He had been dead for 2 weeks. He was laying there with a heroin kit next to him. This is the worst. They were my favorite, 2nd only to Ozzy. Sad, sad days.

Well, this thread gave me a little more insight. Given Staley's situation, I figured it was probably a drug overdose he'd died from. I read that the medical examiner had stated he had been dead for some time before his body was found, but two weeks? That's rather bizarre, especially considering his fame factor, you'd think that someone would have come looking for him before then...

Makes me wonder, if I were still living alone, how long it would take for someone to find my body if I kicked off...

I'm sure LongTooth would find you when he was looking for someone to shoot up with one night. ;)
