A simply 'Yay' or 'Nay' will suffice, though any personal thoughts on the man and his work are obviously welcome.

My two cents:
A guy who got lucky did with his music what hadn't been done before (or at least not done right, apparently)/better.
I like allot of his work. He appears smart and cunning when it comes to his art and he doesn't appear to be backing down from what people and the media say about him. His new album is certainly a let down for MM fans but I believe this just to be him growing as a being and exploring his talents.

So a 'Yay' from me, he should keep on going and I enjoy his work.
A 'Nay' obviously means that you don't like him/his work, and he should stop making music.

Did what hadn't been done before or wasn't done right? Old school industrial, shock rock, glam rock, and every version of metal you can think of? KISS, Bowie, Alice Cooper, even fucking Sabbath, Ministry, KMFDM... they all did it before Manson. And most of them did it better.

well, they all kind of fall into that mistique that nine inch nails (trent reznor) braught to the table in the late 80's and 90's. marylin manson was a baby to be formed in his art and to date his musical accomplishment, outragous and media provocing as they are seem to get worse the more money he makes and the more he tries to become the main show. personaly i loved his first 3 albums, i could care less for his solo album work right now, but ill tell you what...

if manson would just commit himself to producing, and other types of media i would probably be more than impressed. past satisfied, and landing somewhere between pleased and jelous. although not like any of us have any right to critique a signed, million dollar artists as hourly's and salary employees in this world, we just seem to find comfort in things like this.

overall, kudos and a "yay" from me...

Skinny Puppy influenced NIN. I love older NIN, but Trent really didn't bring a whole lot of new things to the proverbial table.

actualy i think bands like joy division and the cure and 10,000 maniac influenced trent in the earlier days of nin, but since then he has dominated the market with his emotionaly driven music and soundscapes... i wont argue this because opinion is hard to prove but thats just how i feel..

Marilyn Manson: My Assessment of the Situation.

Brilliant man.
Brilliant artist.
Mediocre musician.

I've read his autobiography...hell, I even kept up with his online blog there for a while. He truly is brilliant. I respect him for triumphing through his tough childhood (despite the fact that thousands of children go through what he did...he just hit it big). His relationship with Dita von Teese...amusing. She's an amazing woman, really beautiful. Interviews, I rarely read better interviews from current musicians. But his last few albums...not too good at all. I'll admit listening to his older works (back when I went through my "Goth" stage, Hot Topic clothes and all) such as the Smells Like Children album and the songs on his Last Tour on Earth CD...but really, he's mediocre.

IMHO.

He is a unique individual. Highly respectable person. Cunning Speaker and Innovative Visual Artist.

Each one of his albums is a bit different. I get really tired of hearing people bitch that every album doesn't sound as good as "Antichrist Superstar". Fuck, if you want the same album over and over again, just repackaged and edited some more, go buy every single Suicide Commando CD you can find.

At least Manson does explore, some like it and some don't but its not easy being an artist and putting your most sacred shit out there for people to criticise.

I like different music for different reasons, and I appreciate the variety in his albums over the years. It really illustrates personal growth and his development as an artist.

It's a 'yay' from me. I saw him live, I read his biog, and I have all his albums - I think the man's a genius. So what if it's been done before? You can say that about most artists/bands. I think the problem is that he became 'popular' and a lot of the 'anti pops' out there don't like that - regardless of talent.

I don't think it has anything to do with popularity.

But needless to say that a lot of bands that are currently "popular" do not have any talent. So I do understand hating a lot of popular music.

But no matter how bad the new music is...as least we'll never have to hear Chumbawumba ever ever again.
