Most people think that it's just black clothes and depression. Little do they realize that it also involves listening to *genuine* shitty goth music, not the fake shitty goth music.

goth is not defined by music or clothes, or looks or any of that. goth is a way of life, to be able to see beauty where others fail to, to see the light in darkness, to be happy in times of fear that is goth.

The fact is that the goth "culture" was spawned by the music. So to be a good little queerboy you should at least have some knowledge of it.

i did not start this thread with the intention of starting a fight. and fr0g i dont take kindly to being called queerboy if you disagree with me simply say so name calling is not nesassary. you are partialy right in saying goth as a subculture was started by music but it was also spawned out of our wanting to be differnt and against the culture but unlike the punks ,the culture we come from along with the emo kids, is we are passive.

and yeah, i agree with sixx here. none of the bands on your list are remotely gothic. but then again, i have a view on life that could be considered "goth" and i sometimes wear clothes that are very "gothic." but i certainly am not a goth. you argue you are a goth. anyone that argues they are something, usually puts alot of effort into being that one thing, in order to be more goth/metal/emo etc. you, don't seem to. plus if you look deeper into all of it, you find that all of it is superficial bullshit. categorising music is fine. categorising yourself is just pure bollocks.

I dont know any of his album names or anything like that. All I have is a few mp3's that I've collected over the years. I've meant to look deeper and buy some CDs.... but I'm afraid of what I'll find. I dont like Bauhaus very much, and I'm afraid I'll uncover more stuff like that.

And like I said, you don't seem to have very much knowledge on the goth culture, so I'll just sort of clue you in.

Goth music originally started in the late seventies and early eighties, and was often times referred to as other styles/classifications like "death rock." It was a post-punk movement, that reflected the punk style, but with a darker/bleaker outlook. In fact, Siouxsie (from Siouxsie and the Banshees [who is also referred to as the Goth mother]) used to be a roadie/groupie of the Sex Pistols. And most goths I've met are rather agressive and always ready for a fight . . . much like "true" punks.

Then throughout the eighties, the Goth genre saw itself in the reflections of industrial/club music when "dark wave" (a German response to "new wave") and "EBM" type of stuff hit the scene . . . which is more or less a prelude to the industrial-wannabe-goth acts of the 90's, but at the same brought about the "Nu-Goth" movement.

Anyway, the point is . . . like Anti said, Goth music really does suck. Except for Siouxsie and the Banshees. But if you want a better idea of goth music, check out bands like: Christian Death (old, Rozz Williams era stuff . . . it doesn't get more goth than that); Joy Division, Bauhaus; and some industrial junk like: Skinny Puppy, Alien Sex Fiend, VNV Nation; and some nu-goth stuff like: Wumpscut, Swithblade Symphony, Funker Vogt.
