concert stories - 05-07-02

***this thread will be for recounting concert experiences, whether you just got home from one or whether you'd like to recount one that you attended in the past. i'll start...***

concert: slayer
venue: anaheim grove

a chick i know works with one of the larger promoters around here in the l.a. area and is able to get free tickets from time to time. this particular time it turned out to be a free slayer show down in anaheim (near disneyland) and the good news is that we've got working tickets waiting for us. basically there's a few types of tickets; normal, vip and working... working tickets get you anywhere in the venue, even into the places that vip don't.

so, we get to the venue and find her promoter friend, he gives us the tickets and basically says that we don't have to do shit because he's fully staffed from the venue. the first band to hit was diecast. diecast is an up-and-coming hardcore band out of boston. they've got a good sound, good breakdowns and have a lot of energy. all in all i'd definitely see them again.

inbetween sets we basically hung out back stage, talked to a few of the randoms and slugged beers. next up was hatebreed . they put on a good set and since their name was known a bit more they had the crowd moving a lot more. i haven't heard much of hatebreed's music, but from what i did hear i wasn't super impressed. they had a few technical issues during the set, which in no way was their fault, but it still hindered their performance.

after the hatebreed set was over we went backstage where i got to briefly meet tom (slayer's lead singer) and dino (fear factory's guitarist), who both were cool as fuck. since slayer is sponsored by jagermeister they had several bottles just kind of floating through the crowd backstage. i'm not a huge fan of jager, but i still hit the bottle a few times just for the fuck of it. slayer was finally set to go on and everyone started moving to each side of the stage to get a better view... and a better view is exactly what i got, not necessarily of the band, but of their wives/girlfriends. blonde hair and big fucking tits is what i got to watch jiggle in front of me for most of the show. i know one of them belonged to jeff hanneman (guitar), but i didn't catch who the other one was with. slayer showcased mostly new music from the cd, but also threw in a few older ones as well. you could tell that the entire crowd was there to see slayer from the minute they hit their first chord. bodies were moving, heads were banging and those big boobies were bouncing right in front of me. i couldn't have asked for a better night...

Lollapalooza...1993 (?)

Houston Raceway...no shade...110 degrees...spent all my money on beer and couldn't afford the bottled water (no free water!?!). I took a litlle dirt nap that evening, and woke up when Alice in Chains started playing. They were sounding pretty good. Then they began the intro to "Rooster". One of the player's dad (can't remember which member) came on stage, since the song was written about him. It was really cool, to see the man the song was written about. They let him take the mike for a minute...and he was fucking trashed...he started mumbling about how he loved all of us, God bless us, blah, blah...went on for about 5 minutes before the band ushered him away. They started into the song, and after a couple minutes, the old drunk wandered back across the stage and grabbed a microphone, and kept rambling incoherently above the music. Security moved him off stage this time, but he came back...it was really pitiful...I haven't liked the song ever since...

Lets see...Durring Disturbed, some drunk guy was being told by the crowd and the band to jump from the 2nd story onto the first. He did, and no one caught him. He ended up getting hurt I believe.

Same concert, durring the opener NothingFace, the mosh pit was full of skin heads. One of them tried to choke me, so I ended up tripping him. And I believe that they had boxing gloves on as well.

i took one of those at ozzfest a few years ago. i was totally drunk and got separated from my friends while we were walking around so i went to the grassy area of the venue and sat down... well i woke up in one of those 'where the fuck am i' moments right as fear factory hit the stage. i was kind of pissed about falling asleep at a concert, but in the end i knew it was better for me. i got up, rubbed the grass and shit off of me and then b-lined it straight to the beer garden for a refill...

cradle of filth, the paladium, 2001

i went there with a few of my friends and my boyfriend. everything was going great, until it was time for cradle of filth to come on, all my friends disappeared into the crowd... they wanted to get a closer look, but i didn't want to go. (the mosh-pit and the surrounding areas scare me.) anyway, long story short, my boyfriend left me alone in a crowd of large drunken men just so he could see the damn band. i started to cry and followed him into the crowd, then the moshing started, i was too close to the pit and i got elbowed in the stomach.. one of those muscular bouncer-type dudes had to lift me out because i was going to get trampled. so i spent the whole rest of the concert at the sidelines (with a very good view mind you), by myself, crying and nursing my wounds. my bf never even tried to come after me to see if i was okay, and he watched the dude pick me up like a ragdoll after i got hit.

did i mention that was my first concert ever? i'm so traumatized.

anyway, i get to go to ozzfest in july.. with the same people. oh joy of joys, but i'm driving, and i think they might accidentaly get stranded.

excuse me, i'm going to go scream into a pillow now.

am i destined to fall as icarus did? his wings- his freedom destroyed by the one thing he longed for...

2 weeks ago i went to a gig in redhill surrey (3 and a half hrs away from where i live) to see breed 77, vacant stare, fony, string theory and torna-k. well i had seen and hung out with at least one member from every band and i es[ecially knew breeds bassist and string theory's drummer and bassist (i have jake the bassists necklace on ) anyways i went with two of my friends and i managed to get a guest pass from mark who is string theory's drummer.

after torna-k and string theory had played i met up with mark and he fixed meup with an all access pass and i hung iout backstage for the rest of the gig. this is a very brief version of events but if i told you all that happened.... it'd be a novel :p

On tuesday I went to see Hell Is For Heroes, Cyclefly and Alien Ant Farm. They were ok I spose. The cyclefly vocals sounded like he had swallowed like a whole can of helium and I am NOT exaggerating, he sounded like a chipmunk. Hell Is For Heroes absolutely rocked and got the crowd going great. When alien ant farm were playing me and my friend got pushed right to the front of the mosh pit and people were trying to bend my back ways that it simply didn't go ! Dumbass me had one of my dizzy spells and tripped over and this boy was holding my hand asking if I was okay, I was like yeah but I had lost my trainer so I was like there trying to put my trainer back on . I also got kicked on the head twice by some dickhead crowd surfer! It was a good night though

a week or so back i went to exeter's MIDSUMMER NIGHTMARE! it was all cool but the highlight of my night had to be OPETH and ARCH ENEMY!

OPETH really knocked my socks off.... they were amazing they basically controlled the crowd because it was like everyone was under their spell. They made magic with their music and wow it was just so amazing..... their hard thrasy bits were crunchy and then there were these beautiful guitar riffs that you could mellow out to. It was just so amazing....

I went and saw ICP with some friends a few years back ..haha we ended up going to the hospital because one of them was hit in the head with a Faygo bottle. It was fucking hilarious!

I went to Testfest last summer ...It was raining the whole time, i was in a mud sliding contest, i got wasted and stoned ..then everyone was sent home because lightening hit the stage while Kittie was on stage ...I thought it was some kick ass pyros and was yelling for them to blow more up. It was pretty fun

Um ..I just saw NOFX last month. I went this a real hot guy and got to go on stage. The whole lower level was a mosh pit ..crazy shit man. That was fun ..

I went to see BHG. HAHAHA they are awesome! I was drunk the whole time and got in a fight with some fat chick ..she said I was blocking her view ..I think not haha.

Guess I'll review a show from not too long ago...
Was Deicide and Zyklon (guys from Emperor) opening up for Morbid Angel

We show up at the club early to hang out.. the clubs a few hours away from us, so like a whole lot of people made the pilgrimage out there to see this show so we got there a bit early to socialize with our outa state or far-reaches-of-the-state friends. SO all's well. Well, we go in to see Deicide. Now, I love my death metal. Almost love it as much as my inudstrial, the cure or bowie. But I'll be the first to tell you about how crappy Deicide is. I have a few of thier albums, mostly just to show people to make em laugh. And because I'm one of those people who have to have obscure bands albums etc. Well, if you don't know who Deicide is, picture death metal (horrid vocals, fast guitar, double bass guitar and lyrical content revolving around satan and various cult horror picture plots) without the technicality on guitar (wheres the soslos! gah, theres a few but, bleh.) and who actually take thier lyrics seriously. Who could take themself seriously with songs like "bastards of christs creation" and "Biblebasher". We're going back to our first album with a song called "NOWIGROWLINCOHERENTLYSONOONEWILLKNOWWHATWE'REPLAYINGUNTILHALFWAYTHROUGH!!!!!!!! !!!". Anywho, they did better than the first time I saw them, but didn't want to go home and pop in Once Upon the Cross or anything.

Zyklon..can't remember if it was B or D, and I feel horrible I couldnt tell you from who was there. Was Trym and Ihsahn...so whichever Zyklon that is, that's it. But anyway..I'm a big Emperor fan, and I hadn't heard too much of Zyklon yet. Well, now i'm a big Zyklon fan. Kinda like a less black metal Emperor...but I loved 'em. Second time I've met Trym, he's a good guy. They got great response from the crowd theere, espeically since they were more black metal then Deicide and MA and I know how earaching black metal can be. But they did great for a really unknown this side of the ocean band.

Morbid Angel. Hellalujah. Like my 5th or 6th time seein the guys and well Damn. Bout sums it up. They played alot of stuff off Domination and Chapel of Gouls, a few of Blessed and a couple off gateways. I got to see Pete do the 1028 bpm double bass roll in Opening of the Gates again...holy hell, he's fast. And he does it in boots. His feet were a blur..ahh godlike . Can you tell I'm a fanboy? Third time i've talked to Trey Azagthoth..I like when they play these smaller venues becuase you can actually meet the guys if they're in a good mood. Ihsahn came out and did some vocals on Day of Suffering which I thought was pretty cool. Nice pits, great crowd response, no assholes and a lot of great music. Best headache I've had in years

stabbing westward:
i walked right past a dead man, in fact an ambulance had just put the man on the stretcher....a friend inside the club said he watched the man actually die, apparently the man had an overdose and his friends were scared so they left him there

type o negative, coal chamber, deadlights, full devil jacket:
longest concert of my life, nearly five hours of constant chaos, my gf at the time was covered in blood by the end of the concert, not her blood though

the misfits (which was actually just Jerry Only, some ramone on the drums, and guitarist from black flag)
horrible fucking concert, but i didn't pay so hey, highlight of the concert: some guy tried to pickpocket me but realized i had a chain wallet, then he tried to pickpocket my friend, my friend stabbed him with his keys

Ash gig...I was standing in the crowd when this drunk guy took his dick out and started peeing. There was no where to escape from it. I ended up standing on my ex bf's feet. Haha. Deserved it, the bastard. *ahem*.

MOST MEMORABLE CONCERT:

Nirvava / The Breeders / Come

Morocco Shrine Auditorium Jacksonville, FL 10.30.93

I started this off by waiting at the record store for tix 3 hours before they opened. 10 am rolls around and so does a line...around the block. we're forced to draw numbers for a place a line, how fucking gay is that? my Dad said that in the 70s, whoever was first in line got tickets first, dammit. so anyways, i got tix for friends and we left.

day of show, i waited outside 3 hours (i was fourth in line) b4 the venue opened just to hear Nirvana rehearsing thru the building. the place opens up and we all rush the fucking stage to which i got front row. i was elated. Come came on and they ate a dick and then The Breeders followed - they also sucked ass. At the time though, late-93, their 'Cannonball' single was huge and i desperately hated that song so i was overjoyed when someone threw their shoe at Kim Deal midway thru a song and then another shoe at Kelley Deal at the end of the same song. they were so pissed they said "we're not target practice" and ended the show right there. no one gave a fuck cuz motherfuckers were DYING to see Kurt, chanting 'NIRVANA' and all that shit. so Kurt stumbles on stage with a beer and lit cigarette and says "you guys need to keep your shoes on" and the place goes fucking BEZERK!!

now i know Nirvana ain't no fucking Napalm Death or whatever but this was the first great alternative line-up that came to Jacksonville and that place was in fuckin' SKANK mode! plus, i was in the front row - it was wild! one dude was crowd surfing and decided to exit via the back of my neck. a 180 pound guy sliding down the back of your neck as you're leaning over sucks so 5 songs into Nirvana's set i bailed over the barricades and enjoyed the show much better from the side.

a classmate wore a tall, brown Elmer Fudd hat to the show and at the end of the set Kurt, using the mic, comments on the hat and asks Jim if he want sto trade it for his fucking Fender. can you fuckin' dig that shit?! the crowd was jealous! so Jim goes up there, they smash the guitar (turquoise w/ white pick guard, if i remember correctly) and he takes it home. it was later lent out, and even later sold, to Hard Rock cafe where I'm sure it sits fossilized in plexiglas. that guitar made Jim a fucking celebrity at school.

on top of all that, i had the genius idea to wear wax earplugs to the show and they got stuck since i was a total fucking mess after the show (my ticket stub distinegrated in my pocket) and the wax had to be removed by a friend and his trusty tweezers to save me a chewing-out (and a doctor's appt) from Mom. that was a memorable 10th grade concert.

PS - Kurt smoked Benson & Hedges just so ya know.
