I've heard them recommended on countless occasions. What songs should I try to listen to first?

"try to listen to" is the operative phrase here. In my humble opinion, Bowelhouse is a bad, no-talent poser band...so you probably should wait for someone elses opinion...

Yeah, so far I've listened to two pieces... not my style I'm thinking.

i heard a live version of the song "double dare". i liked it. i haven't gotten around to downloading more stuff though.

I don't think you should listen to them, Sir. I listened all the way through a couple albums, and felt like I wasted a few hours of my life.

A lot of people have a hard time listening to them.

Listen to "God in an Alcove," SirVLCIV. That seems to be my favorite song by them.

God in an alcove is good.... they have also done some good covers.... they covered T-Rexs' telegram Sam.... and Bowies Ziggy Stardust... both of which are excellent covers.... one of thier best albums by far is Mask.... though Burning From The Inside is good too....

I do not see how they can possibly be posing as anything seeing as how when they first formed they were doing stuff that was very experimental for the time.... and now there are many bands out there who are posing them..... although I do think that Peter Murphy is much better as a solo artist and would recommend his solo stuff over Bauhaus..... Especially the Album "Deep"

Dark entries

dark entries is probably my favorite. bela lugousi's their popular song. just keep in mind the music is over twenty years old and recorded in a crappy studio. but bauhaus, along with a handful of other bands, were at the front of alot of the dark, moody, music that became so popular later.

I have infinite respect for Bauhaus, but not much tolerance.

Maybe you should try to lisen to `She's in Parties`, cause it`s diferent from others songs of theirs. Or mayby ypu should forget about them and listen to The Mission or Joy Division.

"Bela Lugosi's Dead" is a bit obvious, isn't it? As such, I'll recommend: "The Three Shadows, Part I", "The Three Shadows, Part II", and "The Three Shadows, Part III". Beautiful music.
