Ok, I'm going to try to start a thread where we'll talk about whatever bands we love and why and what we know and experiences and all that good shit that goes with it...
Here's the catch: The band that is listed gets talked about (ex: Black Sabbath)...and the next band to be talked about will be the one that is most related to the prior band talked about by how many are involved in this thread. (let's say most people relate Black Sabbath to Shevy...btw, Shevy sounds so similar to Black Sabbath, it's plagiarism..)
Once the convo starts to go offtopic or get boring about that band, I'll name the next band to talk about (by count of your "votes"). By the way, votes don't count if you can't explain WHY the band you vote for is related to the band of topic. I know it's rigged that way, but that's the point!
anyway, I'll start: New Order. Anything you wanna talk about em...but make sure you list who you affiliate them with, so you have some sort of "vote"...and please try to affiliate the band with an honest answer, not "I'm going to say "x band" because I want them to be the next topic. (That's why I've "rigged" this..)
(I'll list my opinion later if this thread picks up..) I Love New Order! i believe in practicing compassion.

Nine Inch Nails covered a Joy Division song called "Dead Souls" on the soundtrack for The Crow. Dunno if that rings a bell for you or not.
I actually prefer New Order to Joy Division, though some may consider that blasphemous. I dunno... Joy Division just makes me smirk like I do when I listen to stuff like Bauhaus. However, New Order really has an edge to them that makes their sound timeless. Several bands that have come out recently are reminiscent of them. The singer for Interpol, for instance, reeeeeally makes me think of N.O.

Interpol are cool A golden energy
Was rising out of my head
I shed my evil skin
And found myself again I was wrong, I don't mind
The impossible seems possible
This time I'm an electric wire
If the sun can radiate then so can I

anyhow, I agree with you Anti; in fact I only like a few select songs from Joy Division. Well, a few being about 20 songs...
The Bahaus sound was (to my knowledge) always hailed as the "grandfathers of goth" music. I never really understood ~why~ New Order was classed as goth music. Almost like The Cure. The Cure fit, of course, but the bright/pretty tones that both New Order and The Cure are able to produce (so, so, so brilliantly) are what strikes me about them (New Order and The Cure alike).
Aside from being thrown into a deformed "pop" genre, or any sorta weird sub-category (I still struggle with accepting the titles of names like "nu-metal" and "rap-metal"), I think New Order would be classed as goth by their themes, their influences (they're Huuuuuge Joy Division fans) and I guess (heh) that bass tuning/tone that seems to be the "goth sound." You know what I mean, that clear, resonant bass that that doesn't want to mesh with the other instruments' effect settings and such. That kinda bass.
Even though New Order makes me think of Joy Division right away, this is only because of how the media and most fans have come to know them. In terms of their actual ~sound~... I like to buddy them up with The Cure, since they both write (as I said earlier) such exquisitly colorful and pretty sad songs with a lot of energy/spirit to them. i believe in practicing compassion.

Interpol always reminded me more of Joy Division than New Order.
On the topic of Interpol, another band like them, Franz Turdinhand, borrows heavily from The Pixies, who are one of my favourite groups.

I like Franz Ferdinand. The people I know who are the most vocal about hating them are the people who demand that every band introduce something entirely knew to any given scene. Franz Ferdinand doesn't really do that, and I don't think they claim to. However, they do what they do extreeeeeemely well. The retro rock thing is getting pretty overdone, so it takes a lot to stand out.
And it's pretty hard not to borrow from the Pixies. They defined so many things that their sound lives on through like 2345293752978359279 other bands. They define "groundbreaking."

Is Fertinand a patriot of some sorts as well? I admit to not having putting the effort into giving him an honest listen besides the one radio single that was on the radio...
I say patriot because, aside from his borrowing from his influences (EVERY band does that people, get over it), his Scottish sound is the thing that caught me. It reminded me of Ashley McIssac(sp?) who is some Canadian violin player that was all indie and popular because of how he played Scottish folk music in "his way"... although I actually liked the song that Fertinand had on the radio. i believe in practicing compassion.

So many people were havily influenced by The Pixies. I'm just not a huge fan of Franz Ferdinand. I can usually find some stuff I like to listen to more, or actually just pop on a Pixies CD.
The retro-rock thing is fun, but since I don't listen to the radio or MTV, or really go out much.. (jesus, that sounds pathetic..), I can kind of pick and choose my retro bands without getting totally overwhelmed by them.
What I like about the new-retro bands is that they have re-introduced 'fun' music that is still fairly complex and interesting.

New Order is almsot electro dark pop, not simlar in many ways, really, especially in songwriting. The whole approach is different. Which, I think they had to do, to not be called "that band that had Ian Curtis in it.."

In terms of fun, my current favorite is the recent emergence of dance-punk. The Rapture, Hot Hot Heat, The Chinese Stars... man, that stuff is fun. Now you can see indie kids who can't dance for shit actually dancing at shows, and not caring how dumb they look. That was impossible five years ago...

That album is so humurously self-depreciating in so many ways, just an awesome album.
