What's your opinion on Poppy Z. Brites Novels? - 11-05-03

I recently read one of her books and found it pretty interesting in a sense. I usually dont follow up on writers unless I am able to hear good things. I was just wondering if anyone here has read any of her work and could possibly give me their opinion of it.

Not much. She tries too hard to shock.

I love her books, whether she tries too hard or not seems unimportant when you get overwhelmed by the horror erotica of it all.

Which book did you read by the way, Affliction?

Personally, I love Poppy (heh...accidentally wrote 'Poopy' first) Z. Brite's work. I've only read Drawing Blood, and I've been through Love in Vein II twice...But I was pretty impressed. If you like her, you should definitely check out Charlee Jacob. I'm currently reading 'Haunter' by her, and it reminds me a lot of Poppy Z. Brite. Although Charlee Jacob seems to try even harder than Ms. Brite to shock (I'm not complaining about it), her work is definitely worth a look.

I read Drawing Blood and finished Lost Souls? Today. I was impressed with her work..she has a great character development in my opinion. I dont mean to sound weak but I actually shed a few tears when Zilliah died in Lost Souls?.

Does Charlee Jacob have the same subject matter (homo-erotic)?

hmmm....i only read Lost Souls and Exquisite Corpse....i am mixed about her....i find her to be an easy read, that is you can read her shit very fast, and she has some gorey imagery which rocks, but it in no way compares to Ellis's "American Psycho".....and quite frankly, i find her homoerotica rather annoying.....i'm not homophobic or anything, but in what i have read, and according to what i know of her other books, everyone of them has gay-butt-fuckin....itz like c'mon, can she not think of anything else to write about? in the end, her shit becomes rather mundane and repetitive....i doubt i will ever read another one of her books unless someone highly suggests one

I will admit...there was a looooot of gay sex. A little to much..I liked the book but there was some thing about it that reminded me of those corny-romance novels with a man cupping a womans breast...but only gothed out and homo-erotic.

All of her work is homo-erotic orientated, I love it, the way she captures it creates for some fantastic mental visuals.

Oh dear! We are disagreeing again Lillith!!

I didn't think there could be a worse writer than Anne Rice until I read Poppy Z. Brite. Anne Rice is pretentious, annoying, and gets bogged down in details at the expense of the plot. P Z. Brite is all of the above plus reading her stuff just makes me think she's trying too hard to make her readers cringe. I think the descriptive language is sometimes predictable and tiresome. Maybe i'm too hard to please? The only book i quite liked was Lost Souls.

oooh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! interesting.........i never fully read an anne rice novel, only 3/4ths of interview, which i didn't enjoy mainly since i hate the fucking movie.........i don't know if i hate poppy worse, but excellent point.......she is definately a "shock-value" writer (which i must confess, so am i)........however, i do enjoy her graphic scenes, but i dunno, they just don't scream evil to me.....not like ellis' American Psycho..........but yeah, her stories do have a bit of predictability within them...........and just too damn much homo-erotica

I've only read one Poppy Z. Brite book, and unfortunately I can't remember what it was called. It was a crow book, and a man was avenging his lover's death. I found the writing quite enjoyable, though a bit simple and predictable. I didn't like the homosexuality of it, though, and would have enjoyed it much more if he had been mourning the loss of a female lover rather than a male one. Strangely enough, I don't think it's simply the homo-erotic content, but the way it's portrayed. I find that it doesn't bother me too much in Anne Rice's books, the vampire ones of which I love, but I find it very distasteful in Poppy's.

I'll try being nicer if you try being smarter.
