Work is of two kinds: first, altering the position of matter at or near the earth's surface relatively to other such matter; second, telling other people to do so.
I would have gone for something like Nineteen Eighty-Four, Catch-22, or whatever to win. I guess it wasn't billed as 'what is the best book ever written' but more as a 'what do the masses like to read' (sorry I used the term 'masses', I don't like it myself, only it is probably what the organisers of the Big Read would have used to talk about us proles!)
