1st editions, signed copies, limited editions... - 05-19-04

do any of you guys collect: 1st editions, signed copies, limited editions... ?

it's not something that's ever occured to me until now, i've just been thinking lately it'd be cool to have collectors editions of my most favourite books... something i can keep and maybe pass along to my kids and stuff.

ordinarily i'd have a shit load of 1st editions, but i've always bought my books from a book club i'm a member of... so all my books are club editions, which don't really count. i do have a lot of paperbacks, though.

anyways, i've begun my little collection, and the first two i've got are:

american gods by neil gaiman... this is the new limited edition signed and numbered version. it's got 40 pages of additional text, and is considered the authors preffered edition. looks pretty badass too, bound in japanese silk, with a cool slipcase. two tone lettering throughout the book, aswell as a few small illustrations by dave mckeen. 1 of 750 copies.

house of leaves by mark z. danielewski... this again the signed limited edition, know as the red edition. the spiral on the cover is red, aswell as all struck passages and the word 'minotaur' throughout the book. the actual cover (under the duster) is embossed in gold with the letters "jt" which are the central characters initials. it's also signed "jt" in red on a blank page inside.

those are my two treasures. i did a search for a copy of "the catcher in the rye," but at $5000... i think i'll just have to give that little gem a pass. maybe someday, though.

anyways, enough of my ramblings, any of you guys collect?

I've got a copy of a stargate book signed by the actors, does that count? lol
I have a habit of buying books on paperback and if i like them, buy the hardback copy and shelve it away with my other pristine unread hardbacks..
