Bob (Which represents bob of the instant that this is happening) lives in HouseA.

Mark lives in HouseB with Mary.

Bob goes back in time five minutes.

Bob is still Bob, though he's in a different segment of time then what he began at, and so he has been altered slightly.

So.. imagine this:

(Bob)HouseA goes through time -- (AlteredBob)HouseA

That's pretty much how it would be for then.. okay?

Now lets say that Bob is the son of Mark and Mary.

Bob goes back in time to before he was born and kills mark.

So: (Bob)HouseA goes through time -- (AlteredBob)HouseA moves to HouseB containing Past(Mark&Mary) and kills Past(Mark) which removes Past(Mark) from the picture.

(AlteredBob) Returns back to his normal time and: (AlteredBob) becomes (AlteredAlteredBob)HouseA while he lives nearby (Mary)HouseB.


why is he still alive? Because he isn't the original Bob to begin with, AND he went outside of the formula and altered it by returning elsewhere within it, which in turn meant everything after the incident caused changes throughout time, instantly, and when Bob returned back to the future he was still present since he was the altered version, and therefore not truly linked to the time he left.

your use of house A and house B is unnecessay methinks... but this sounds simular to the alternate universe theory of time travel (IE - Timeline) where we're not really going back in time, just going into a parrallel universe where we designate.

if there is only one continuum, and bob was travelling in it AND he killed mark before bob was born then it stands to reason that either mary was already preggers or mark wasnt the proud pappa...

Altered Bob would not return to the Altered Future Dimension. For in killing what would have been his father, he killed his link to the Altered Future Dimension. Bob would return to the dimension he left, the laws of cause and effect prevent him from being able to go anywhere else. If though, he was somehow able to go to Altered Future Dimension chances are the paradox his presence would create would create a fatal flaw in the space-time continuum, ulimately destroy him, and probably the entire Altered Future Dimension. But this is all supposing that it is even possible to change the future by altering the past. For say Bob does go back and kill Mark, at the time Bob would have been born, he wouldn't have been because his future self has already killed Mark and destroyed any chance of being born, almost like Temporal Suicide.

But just to test it lets jump in the Delorian, power up the Flux Capacitor, and go "BACK TO THE FUTURE".

Actually, reality itself is nothing more then a series of mathematical calculations which create one giant formula, and people exist within sections of the formula itself.

By going back in time you are transposing yourself from one area of the formula and dropping yourself into another, therefore resulting in alterations within the formula later on automatically. Add in that every ... well... instant that passes by you are becoming new, then by going back in time and appearing there you will end up becoming a new person, and therefore a seperate label unto yourself, without any connection to the past. The belief that the past and future are interlinked and that by altering the past will alter the future, and those of the future in the past will become altered along with it, is idiocy, since, of course, that would make little logical since, seeing as it would mean that the person was actually still linked directly to that time, and so it wasn't real time travel but a represenatation of that person in the past.

Reality may be definable by a gigantic formula(Super String Theory), but to say that by transposing a section of the future version of the formula upon the past version you will alter the future formula is incorrect. Super String Theory holds that the formula is infinite in every moment of time and encompasses any and all eventualities. The String dictates what is to occur and the travelling backward through time to change events has already taken place. Really there is no free will in the ability to change to past, the String has already predicted that someone will travel backward to change events, and that change has already occured and is figured into the String, the current traveller is only repeating the journey taken by the future version of themself.

I'm not talking about super string theory, hell I've never even heard of super string formula... I'm talking about logic.

my question is, if bob does indeed go back in time, even to an altered universe, what happens to time and the other universe?....does it travel with him, or freeze, or are their now two?

The formula itself is constantly being altered, converted, extended, etc, as variables are always being put in.

Simply put, by going back in time the reality itself still existed in the future, though it would be altered instantly since there was a difference in the formula behind where it was located.

The real problem is that there exist things, you know.. like + x / - which we don't even know about, and probably will never comprehend, which exist within the formula itself, and therefore any real representation is quite inaccurate to the true thing.

But think of it like this.. everyone is a variable, and we can be moved about. Take this variable, drop it here, the formula is altered, but everything still exists.

Any body here played Soul Reaver 2 on PS2? It has a good theory on the way time travel and changing the past may work.

I found Soul Reaver to be boring, and Blood Omen 2 to be total shit.... hence my reluctence to play Soul Reaver 2.

BO2 was disappointing and a shit way to end the series, but the idea and story were good...I guess.
Soul Reaver 2 is where you find out the truth of what is really going on in the background of the other games. How Raziel came to be the Soul Reaver etc.

Oh, except going back to the future couldn't happen thus far.

Basically, you go back in time and kill your own father, nothing changes. Your father is simply dead, you still exsist marooned in another time, for everyone else you've merely gone.

If you did go back to the future nothing will have changed either, the past that you affect is null. You can't.

That's string theory in Laymans terms.

People travel in time all the time though, astronauts go out and age less than people left on earth. Travel fast enough for long enough, you'll be younger than your son when you return, whilst also experiencing less than your son.

only thing i can figure is we got two theories.
1: every human being and thing on the planet has it's own 'universe', if alteredbob went back in time, and killed his parents, the bob he was before he left would be affected, but he would not be the same bob.
but seeing as two timelines can't occur at the same 'time' by logic, alteredbob must've gone to another dimension, where bob lives his life and experiences time at the same time as alteredbob experiences time only a few years earlier.

so how is it alteredbob can change the future in another persons timeline when he's living his own timeline?
i don't think it's possible in that theory to do so.
let's say alteredbob doesn't kill his parents.
when he reaches the point where bob is supposed to get born, a third bob is made. it's not the same bob as it was earlier.
why?
imagine you're a friend of bob, suddenly he dissapears.
now fast forward to the exact same moment as bob went back in time and became alteredbob. at that moment, an unlimited amount of alteredbobs and bobs would emerge.
let's imagine it from alteredbobs point of view, he arrives, sees bob leave back in time, but at the exact same moment, wouldn't the bob who went back in time just now come back right there and see yet another bob go back in time?
i mean it's just not possible.
an infinite loop i would say.
but seeing as the exact same matter can't be at the exact same place at the exact same time.. how could any of it be logical?
would bob have had to kill his father to prevent the loop?
heh i guess i ponder stuff like this too much.

i think sepiroth explained it best with the string and how everything is predicted into the big String.

but, for my POV, i believe time travel is impossible.
even though worm holes and all that may be able to make us travel in time theoretically, i don't think it's possible in the real world.
hence all this time travel talk is really redundant.
but fun to ponder
