ok im going to need an example to explain what i mean so...
if your laying there thinking and you roll over is your brain making that action a thought or is the things your thinking about your only thoughts?
im not sure if thatll make sense to anyone... but if you're not actually thinking 'damn im uncomfortable im gona roll over' and your body just does it anyway is that just your brain functioning or are these things actually thoughts? KIA ATA HANGATA TAKU NEI TITIRO

Are you talking about instinct Vs. intent? Work is of two kinds: first, altering the position of matter at or near the earth's surface relatively to other such matter; second, telling other people to do so.

Or higher brain functions over lower brain functions?

It's probably a subconcious reflex. Then again, I'm just pulling that out of my ass. I can't say for sure.

I think it's all subconcious. You're thinking whatever it is you're thinking about but when you roll over that's in your subconcious...deep down you know you're uncomfterbly so it's just like a reflex and you move to make you feel better....
always,

One thing about subconcious and concious mind that I just thought of, right..?
If we can do so many things subconciously; roll over, scratch our asses, and instinctively react: jump out tof the way of a car or automatically think or say something (hello, how are you, piss off, the sky is blue, i like cheese, etc.)...where do WE as people exist?
Are we what we conciously choose to be, or are we what we subconciously 'react' to be...?
Just a thought; I can go into more detail if you want, but I don't want to waste anyone's time if they think that this is a load o bull.
But seriously; what do YOU think..? I don't want to be remembered...

i think we are giving too much credit to instinct here... i prefer the lower vs higher functions as aforementioned. we dont THINK so much about scratching an itch or rolling to relieve pressure somewhere because they have been such a repetitive set of actions over the period of our lives that they have been strongly conditioned into us... saying otherwise would be akin to saying that slowing at the sight of a police car while talking to a friend is an intinctual act of self preservation from the subconcious rather than the conversation (concious) ___Nick_the_Rogue___ To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. Okay, errant, I hear you...but theologically speaking 'n all:
Say you pick your nose...(as an example)...this is a natural instinct, right? "I got summing in my nose; gotta get it out!!"
But someone sees you do this. And they think that you're a disgusting slime bucket because of that...doesn't that affect who we are?
(I know that is a little extreeme; but think of other examples like that...) I don't want to be remembered...

actually, picking ones nose is ALSO a conditioned (sortof) action since we are taught from a very early age to keep that area free of mucus (though our parents wiping our nose and their scolding of us if we play with the "messyness")... just because one form of cleaning of mucus is seen as less "clean" or "polite" does not mean that the frowned upon one is an instinct ___Nick_the_Rogue___ To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. i suppose it depends on if you're purposely trying to fart
or if it just *leaks* out
and guru, with the original topic, i think it depends on what you'd classify as a thought?
imagine if we didn't have subconscious help and we had to actively think to do each action:blink, inhale, etc]
or we had to detect and command each individual muscle to act the way we wanted. what a bitch that would be have you seen my marbles?

I'm gonna go with Sartre on this one.
1) Rolling over = unreflected consciousness
Ex. I see a bus. I run to catch up with it.
2) Thinking about rolling over= self-reflected consciousness
Ex. I curse my stupidity for missing my bus. Dufresne: "I'm a pacifist."
Caboose: "You're a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "No dude, that's a pedophile."

if we did have to command each individual muscle would we become so used to it would just become part of our everyday life and probably just our subconscious?
