Murder the Murderer?! - 09-15-03

For some obscure reason America has people kill the murderer.
You know, death sentence.

Am I the only person who can't figure out why they're KILLING a KILLER?
I thought we were against killing? Hence why the killer was in trouble.

America isn't the only place that does this. It's Hammurabi's code. In any event, it's the best form of prevention we have. Not that I'm necessarily for it, mind you.

Prevention? From what? Someone going nuts and killing someone?

"Oh my, I'll stop before my mind snaps and I pick up a few weapons and murder a few people, and think about the consequences of my actions."

Yeah..I see that happening allllll the time.

Basically, if someone feels it deep enough within themselves to kill someone, they may do it again. Supposedly it's like smoking. At first you choke, then you get used to it. Finally, it becomes addictive and it's hard to quit.

I suppose military people are different. After getting taken out of the area and stimulous they are back to non-killing people. If they are not they get the chair, same as anyone else.

No, prevention from the murderer killing anyone else.

Once the murderer is dead, he can't kill anyone else-can he? Are you going to assert that the killer can come back from the grave to murder again?

i thought most of the times a killer is executed based on state laws, the degree of the crime, and prison population.....technically, as far as executions go, i think america does only a few a year

Personally, I think if you kill someone you don't need to be on this planet anymore. Not to say any of us are much better, but hey we don't chop people up or anything.
I love Texas simply because they know how to do it right, if you kill someone, they will kill you back. It wastes your and my tax money to see them sit in a jail for the rest of their lives or possibly get paroled so they can go out on the streets and wait for that bomb to blow up in their head again and start murdering people again. So I'm sorry if it upsets anyone, but personally I say fry the bastards for what they have done, get them the hell out of the jail system. It's my money that's keeping them fed and clothed and I'm just not too happy about it. Think about it people..If someone killed your mother and for some reason the son of a bitch got out of prison because of all the " pro life" people and killed your brother out of spite..wouldn't you be just a little bit miffed?

I don't believe in death sentences, I believe in a life of torturous boredom.

I don't have anything against 'frying' people who go out and murder people. But, I hate the death sentence because who knows how many innocent people were executed?

Also, why the killer is probably very distrubed, he is also a human being, and it's gonna sound cheesy, but he probably has it worse than any of us.
Detachment from reality etc.
So yeah, for me it's from a case to case thing, who deserves what.

Kill one man and you're a murderer, kill many men and you're a conquerer, kill them all and you're GOD!

it is a pointless machine, for killers there will remain to be for eternity, people will always kill...the machine is a waste, it deters not the man with a gun....it is even an ironical machine, for it is controlled by a being, he who throws the switch, a killer.....

Very poetic. With a few tweaks you could make it into a haiku.

It m,akes no sense to me... There is no statistical evidence that it deters crime at all and IMO the idea of a group of reasonable, rational people deliberating for a long time and then cooly deciding to kill another is a bit more disturbing than the idea of one aberrant, disturbed person killing another in a fit of anger or whatever. IMO there are much better ways of dealing with killers, such as locking them up for life without parole (btw this costs less than execution).

I'd like to see some actual statistical evidence that keeping someone alive for life in prison costs less than executing them. I understand that executions cost a deal of money especially where court proceedings are concerned, but to feed a man 3 squares for 40 years (maybe more if he has more than one life sentence and happens to be a young man) and provide him with the necessities of life (toothpaste, clothes, sheets, soap, etc.) has got to cost a pretty penny.

I got the stats from an ethics textbbok, and you might be able to find them on the Amnesty International website. The extra cost of the death penalty comes from all the extra legal proceedings and stuff to ensure that the person being executed is actually guilty.
Also, inmates can work in the prison to pay for those necessities and thus reduce the cost of their upkeep. I once heard that at one time in Texas, the cost of keeping someone in jail was under $500 per year due to all the work that the inmates did.

I'll check that out, thanks. Now the whole question of prisoners working is another question all together. I suppose any in house work is fine, but out here in my neck of the woods we actually have a problem with the whole deal. Seems that a local medium security prison decided that it would be a good idea to teach their inmates to silkscreen. That's all fine and dandy except now they get several local county and city bids (since they are much cheaper than local printers) and to boot they actually started to advertise. Now isn't that a bitch...I always thought it was illegal for prisons to compete with local businesses.

I keep good terms with writers, for the simple reason that if they were to be jailed they could be just as content, maybe even more so. hmm *thinking about becoming a writer, Remindeing me of shawshank redemption, I wonder what kind of books state prisons have...

well theres that one aussie dude, uh chopper(?), he's imprisoned for multiple homocides and he is a writer.....i heard they also made a movie about hime recently.....but that's besides the point.......

you know, you guys were discussing the costs of preceedings and whatnot when an execution is decided, but is that not truly, in its greediest manner, nothing but explotation? i mean seriously, you take a man such as Jeffrey Dahmer, or Ted Bundy, J.W. Gacy, Ramirez, etc., the point is that everyone knows these guys were guilty......for one judicial thingy, that is the main trial itself, can easily decide such men as guilty, and a death sentence for such a man would be way cheaper.......but i know that for your everyday murder to be executed, there might be more legal bullshit.....but, in the totality of things, killing a killer is not so horrible (especially when we think about the laws prior 19th century, and vigilante justice)......all this money and whatnot is nothing more than proof that america's legal system is total shit and totally exploits people.......and i personally, if indeed i was imprisoned for murder, would much rather be fried than fucking butt raped in the shower for the rest of my life....
