Life as an organism - 09-24-06

The human body is home to a large number of organisms that work together to create a single larger organism.

The human species consists of billions of humans that form a single organism. It exists to preserve it self and constantly tries to improve it self by killing off less than perfect "cells".

If you do consider that all humans are part of a larger organism, the human species, then what roles do wars play? Do they exist mainly to get rid of weaker "cells"?

Also, the human species "organism" can not survive without other species that it is competing against. For example, humans can't live with out trees, animals, insects etc. Since that is the case then are all earth speicies just mainly part of the single organism?

Is the next phase / challenge for the entire species/organize a move or split to another planet? Just like an amoeba asexually reproduces?

I don't of the earth as one organism. I think of it as lots of seperate bits. Maybe it's just my head that can't get around the diversity of all living things.

Before we had male/female everything did reproduce asexually. When male and female appeared, evolution exploded because of the mixing up of genetic material - before this evolution was very slow as you might imagine when something is reproducing asexually - these were clones right?

Wouldn't it be a bit backward for us to get rid of male/female again? Asexual reproduction makes us more vulnerable to diseases and genetic cock ups...

have you seen my marbles?

I didn't mean that human beings would asexually reproduce. I meant that all humans as a whole might be a single organism.

6.5 billion humans = one organism that is constantly feeding, growing, improving.

Now that this planet is creaking under its weight, the human species will need to spread to other planets. That is where the asexual reproduction comes up. It might split and slowly (over many many centuries) divide to cover another planet that we may find.

I was thinking something like this yesterday.

Quote:
Is the next phase / challenge for the entire species/organize a move or split to another planet?
Assuming it could be done, one of two things would probably happen:

1 ) It would work, and life goes on.
2 ) It tries to happen, and fails because the human genetic code is too messed up from breeding and the ones who try fail because of it. While others who are "Made" better could pull it off can't (because we do have lives of our own).

Overal, I think evolution doesn't stop (a more accurate question is "Can it stop?"). So we will be constantly forced as an organism to deal with ourselves. So while extrememly probable that we will evantually have to move to another planet (assuming that we don't go exstinct), there's another way to stay on the planet: Keep it goin via Machanical means.
Sure it's an absurd idea, but it would be possible (assuming we had enough time and man power).

Although I think I've answered your question (while philosophizing a bit else) could you elaborate a bit more on your point? Otherwise yes, the human population could be considered as one big Organism, just like the Job Market.

i like the idea, gargoyle, i think you're onto something. i had a related, though fairly dissimilar, idea some time ago. reality depends on the detail you observe it from. so for us, we see humans as being separate from everything else, but another intelligence might look at earth and see only one animal. in fact, an even more greatly detached intelligence might look at our universe as one system with no significant internal structure. i think it all really depends on how far you can blur your perception. i definitely think that earth might be like an organism. but then why should it divide? cells can die, too. maybe that's where we're headed. if we don't reproduce first.
