Actually, there is no way to prove that anything really does exist at all.

How do we know that everything isn't a dream/illusion to us? What if, for example, I'm dreaming this somehow. Sure, you could say, "No, you aren't. I'm self-aware." But there is no way to prove that, is there? All of you could be a creation of my own brain...

"I think, therefore I am" is usually the logic whereby we ascertain our own existence.

However, you can't ascertain anyone else's existence, hence, I do not exist, I am not.

Exactly what I meant. This is one of the stranger parts of life. Almost depressing...my girlfriend could be a product of my own brain...

If I made you through my own head, then that would mean I define existance. If that is the case, then you exist, because I created you within the existance I also created.

Same with your g/f thefinalw0rd. Sure you created her, but she still exists.

I have asked myself this question for two years now,..and I still don't have the answer.
I have always wondered: is this all real, am I dreaming and every night when I go to sleep I am just expirencing one of those dream-in-dream nights, if this is fantasized but when I go to sleep I am in the real world, and other questions such as these.

Someone please help me find this out or give me a lil bit more proof about one of them. Although, I do not think the mind can take it all in without going at all insane.

Though it would be interesting if my mind had subdivided parts of every person I knew. Although thats unrealistic, it could be possible. I really does strain one's mind to think about it.

Of course, from my point of view, I could say that I never could have come up with the things that others of you have said, which would mean that you aren't necessarily creations of mine.

But that doesn't do anything from your point of view, because I'm just another possible creation of all of yours...so we return to the first thing. It's a paradox, of sorts.

the question really isnt whether or not other people besides the Self exists... be they hallucination or not, it is up to the Self to act upon the stimuli.

now that doesnt mean that the Self can just go on a homocidal rampage and kill any "hallucination" it sees, for if they arent a dream then it is immoral to hurt them unfoundedly and if they ARE a manifestation that makes the Self a Deus. Making the Self a Deus gives the Self ultimate responsibility for the "manifestations" and so killing them unfoundedly would ALSO be immoral...

its a catch 22, so my advice would be to just go with it no matter what you believe... "the reality of the insane is still reality, just a different one from ours"

Speaking for myself, I don't. But its not hard to understand the idea of these type of things if you keep your mind wide open.

The individualism necessary in this question makes it null and void when applied to an environment that encompasses so much more than the individual. You could possibly exist even if you weren't in consciousness of your own existence. The fact that you're dreaming this would imply that you are dreaming this, making the perception that we exist truth to your perception, and the environment that exists outside the scope of our inhalation proves that we all exist as well. If you say "You do not exist" could only be true if the environment around you realized that you did not exist.

Someone once said, "Not all perceptions are true, but when people act upon those perceptions, the consequences of those actions are very much truth." Errant put it a lot more succinctly and eloquently than I could. The very fact that you are stimulating yourself proves that you exist individually. The very fact that you "live" (reacting to stimuli) proves that you exist. So our existence is not defined by our measly individual preoccupation with our own existence, but also our reaction with an environment. In responding to the environmental, we secure our own existence.

You think therefore you exist is incorrect for the same reason "I don't exist is an incorrect statement." You exist conscious of your own existence or not. How great an existence that is is up to discussion.
