Ethics? - 03-21-07

Do you personally believe that morality is relative or absolute?

What I mean to say is, area moral codes universally applicable, or are they merely a "social contract", which is intended to control members of society. If the later is the case, then I think morality becomes something completely trivial [not that this is a bad thing].

What are you thoughts?

Do you think biology is relative or absolute?

When people talk of the freedom of writing, speaking or thinking I cannot choose but laugh. No such thing ever existed. No such thing now exists; but I hope it will exist. But it must be hundreds of years after you and I shall write and speak no more.

That's an entirely different question.

And it doesn't at all compare with the issue of moral relativism.

It's actually the same question. And you didn't raise the issue of moral relativism.

You know, it would help your case if you knew what words meant before you started using them.

Yeah, I don't understand what you're going on about either Messiah.

Anywho, read Nietzsche. Morality is extremely relative.

Nietzsche is an idiot. He is really not even considered a philosopher by many.

He makes claims, and develops theories without supplying any evidence, and hence what he has to say has little logical force. Furthermore, he is obsessed with power, and says things like: "Thou goest to a women? Do not forget thy wip!"

Morality is the study of a metaphysical subject. It doesn't make any sense to discuss it as being either subjective or objective, anymore than it would to ask, "Is biology relative or absolute?"

In retrospect, I suppose I was being a semantical jackass because he/she obviously meant morals, and I suppose our individual morals. But still.

No one considers Nietzsche "not a philosopher" unless they're an idiot. That's not how philosophy works; this is the No-True-Scotsman fallacy. And every philosopher has said and done some dumb things- they're still human beings. Heck, read the Republic.

Oh, word . . . then again, I love the symantic game myself. But I'm curious, how is it you define "morality" as metaphysical, and "morals" as physical? If indeed, that's what you're sayin' (as it sounds to me).

And furthermore, Nietzsche is, without a doubt, the greatest modern philosopher (if not the greatest philosopher ever). In all my years spent with philosophers, I've never heard any of them ever declare that Nietzsche WASN'T a philosopher. And I don't know where you're getting the idea that he doesn't provide any logical justifications. If anything, he drilled the point so much so that his works became tedious. You obviously studied very little of Nietzsche.

No, they're both involving the metaphysical. But individual morals can be either subjective or objective. The study of morals... the question just doesn't make sense.

Moral relativism, no. Cultural relativism, yes.
