Young) of Oxford University discovered that a squid possesses nerve fibres, they are so large(relative size) that they are able to isolate and study the transmissions...There is one about 1 millimeter in diameter that is found in the body wall.

They also study Starfish for nerve study as starfish have no central nervous cluster (brain, spinal cord, solarplexus etc.) so every nerve in their bodies plays a part in what would normally be handled by a brain.

actually it is a little more complicated than that....
after years of research by biologist that study animals alone they publish their research i.e..... habitat, body functions, life span, so on and so forth then another scientist that is working on oh say a cancer cure will see that so and so animal has the certain characteristics that would apply for the conditions needed for the experiment and then the mad scientist testing begins!!! so there goes the enee, menee, minee, mo theroy
