This is a general rambling. Wondering if anyone has anything to add on this.

It is no news to anyone that we live in a world populated by approximately 90% sheep, 6% who don't care and 4% frustrated people capable of independent thought.

I am positively disturbed by the lack of people who are capable of functioning outside the "norm".

While "sheep" are very good for the comedic value they pose to people who are not... you have to wonder.

It seems that those who can think for themselves and be themselves, regardless of what that means.... are the bain of existence.

This is actually the ideal makeup of society. The majority, "sheep", by maintaining the status quo, keep society stable and resilient against disarray, while the fringe provide the new and provocative ideas that advance civilization. Societal evolution is analogous to biological evolution in this way; if the mainstream where like the fringe than adaptation and advancement would be impossible since good ideas as well as bad ideas would be lost in the constant influx. And you must remember: individual thinking is not necessarily correct thinking. New ideas need to tested on and gradually accepted by the more traditional and less malleable mainstream.

They're good for a lot more than that. Fringe thinkers are by nature not good followers of rules or other people. Valuable institutions like the military and police force, however, necessitate those traits.

No, they are like mutations; necessary for advancement, but too much of them can be deadly.

'sheep' make money, raise children and generally do what a society should.

i'd rather do my own thing than be a sheep but it is a good point that without a (huge) majority of sheep society would not be able to exist. and without the sheep being capable of independent thought wouldn't be nearly as fun because you wouldn't seem so different

If space travel is ever truely developed to it's potential, the 10% that is our catalyst for forwarding our society, will be the first to leave this place.. at that time, earth will slowly begin to degrade into the stupidity that is the majority of it's population..

I think we are more children than sheep. We choose a piper to follow because few can actually play a tune of their own. It's the pipers we need to be most concerned about.

Some good points raised in that second post. The "sheep" are necessary. And never overlook the fact that in many ways each "individual" is a sheep as well. Not to mention that just because one is a "sheep" it does not mean they are stupid. Many of them are highly intelligent, if they follow the "status quo" it is because they believe it works, or at least for them. Or that they realize ruffling feathers (I'm jumbling metaphors, baaaa-aaad) will get them nowhere. Or it could be that they don't consider any of their ideas to be any better than what is the "status quo", or they don't have any idea how to improve it, and wisely stay quiet about it rather than demonstrate ignorance.

The sheep are only necessary to sustain a society we have created. if we would allow it to fall into anarchy and decay we could all be cool. We would have to start eating the dead tho afterwards since this world doesnt have a natural food supply large enough to sustain our entire civilization. Damn that would make some great snapshots.
