All we can hope for is to make the best of what we get. Why? Because nothing we do will be immortal. Everything we ever create and accomplish will begin to crumble, succumbing to change and entropy the instant it is complete. That doesn't mean i think we should just do nothing, we should just accept that nothing is static, that everything will someday be rubble. Once we accept that someday we will all die, we can begin to truly accomplish great things.

hmm... if all we do will crumble to dust... how can one ever hope to destroy the universe?
all it would take is a little thought experiment. unfortunately, people believe the laws of physics more that they do in gods and monsters... so no magic is left in the world.

"But this is America, where we unapologetically bastardize other countries' cultures in a gross quest for moral and military supremacy." L.G.
The status quo in a "civilized" society will always be a false belief in an ordered, structured Universe, ruled by both laws of Man and law of Nature. Why? Because "civilizied" people will always choose a world in which rules all ready exist over one where rules can be made up through trial and error.

My 1 1/2 cents worth:
In reference to the laws of nature and the laws of man, I think Bill Leeb said it best, "This volatile paradox will never stand!"

Imagine a world without hypothetical situations...
"I want a diamond, I really do
I think that you should give me one
Then you can prove your love is true
And that the gift giving has just begun
I want that diamond, I want that thing
A tennis bracelet, a ring
It better shine, it better cut
I know it is expensive but...
What other way can you make four months of your measely salary last a lifetime
And what other thing have I ever asked you for
Besides...
The ability to read my mind
And I didn't get that either, Yet
I want that diamond, I want it so
All of my irritating friends will know
That I have worth, not only that
But that you love me even though I'm fat
I want that thing, I want it now
I'll say it once, I don't care how you get it
You can rob a store, There just is nothing I want more
Than diamond jewelry for me
And I'll talk louder so you see how very much it means to me!
Even some little stud earrings
Give me the goddamned diamond!!!"- Rasputina, "Diamond mind"
