It was a beautiful moment when he fell apart before her, crumpled to his knees in utter despair. He let a sob escape and she looked upon his solemn form, her hands held to his head. Oh How wretched he was, there before her...times like this made her feel sympathetic. His very whole was there beneath her, she knew it was him, plain in form. Those were the times she felt most in control of him. His bitter tears made her laugh inside. She pulled him up into her again. "One more, one more chance, David. I still love you."
Lilith sat upright on the bed. It had been another long restless night without much sleep. Those few moments that she was pulled from her harsh reality were only to be banished by the petty abstractions- those queer intrusions that seemed to be doubling every waking moment with David. He loved her very much...she knew she wouldnt be sane without him. It was his mystery that bothered Lilith.
Things were feeling out of sorts today. David was already on a plane heading off to work. Lilith knew that today would be a lonely day, she would miss him dearly. He might be gone more than three days if the weather didnt let up. Lilith pulled herself up off the bed and opened the curtain. Everything was blanketed in cold white snow. She knew instantly it would be a long day without David. I'm going to make breakfast----
Hours away David sat in his boring office waiting for the meeting to begin. He impatiently checked his wristwatch. He had a feeling that something wasnt quite right. He wanted to get home as soon as possible. Lilith was feeling a lot of stress right now, he thought. She was spending a lot of time alone- casting herself away from the other females around her. Her friends were less interested since she had quit her job as a computer programmer. Their concern bothered him.
Lilith felt like making breakfast.. She pulled out the eggs and flour and milk...made a big mess in the kitchen.
She felt a pang of guilt, nonsense, a feeling of uneasiness. She brushed it off. The biscuits were ready. Maybe I should invite some of my friends over for breakfast. She casually pulled out her addressbook and called ...hmmm I'll call...Adria Rice. I havent spent time talking to her in awhile.
"Hi."
"Lilith!"
"How are you?"
"Oh you know, life's busy here, Josh is packing the kids off to school. I hate to complain but you may have made the right decision to leave...work is just awful!"
"How is Josh. I heard you two were planning a vacation."
"Oh. no. the vacation is cancelled. Big dea. Oh well. How's David? thing's going alright."
"Um yea. He's off at work right now and I was just making breakfast. Was wondering if you and the girls might get together."
"Yea. WEll. I'm reealy busy right now things but...hey how about lunch?"
"I'd love to."
"Ok well you know what, I'm going to get together with Marie anyways so let's do this, they'll be here around 11:...25, we'll just meet at your place."
"We?"
"Yea...oh right...ok i gotta go. Sorry to cut you short."
"I'm...um ok.."
"You take care hun!"
Her false sympathy was bothersome.
She could make out a sound of faint laughter...although something felt strange about the call.
"Ok. Bye Marie."
"Bye and oh Lilith. You take care. I know things are tough with your husband's career switch."
click.
Let the man cry for pete's sakes. Hey, if they were busy having fun besides themselves without her that was fine. "I'm so sick. I'm so sick."
Lilith let her weight fall down on her hands. Oh how her head pulsed.
At the office David could feel the pressure of weight, pulsing in his head- He got migraines quite often. This was the worst moment to get a migraine. "Not now! Not now! Come on!" He waited impatiently for the people to get settled.
While at home Lilith had fallen down to her knees, sobbing...I'm a mess! ooooh. How long until she found herself there- broken down...there at home- no not a mother, no not a someday- a nothing. a nothing. a nothing. already she felt the sympoms...oh doctor was right...i am breaking up. stumbling through to the bathroom, she pulls out her little purse- one pill should fix this. all i need is one pill. somehow her estimations were quite off- because the feeling wouldn't go away.
i need some peace. oh god. lilith let her head fall down upon the bed.
spinning, everything was spinning. daaavid. oh.....suddenly the phone began to ring- brrring brrring the sound pounded into her ears-
"Hello hello?"
"Hi lilith i'm sorry to be short again but we arent going to be able to make it."
That's not Adria, lilith thought. "Maria, i know you're not at work. Why are you calling me! You are home with your kids and you're calling me to tell me that you cant make it when you werent even invited! and stop trying to sound like Adriana! "
....."Lilith? Are you alright. Look i know this has been....--
"What? you know this haas been a hard time for me, well let me tell you you know nothing about my life, nothing, you go ahead and laugh....Maria stop laughing!"
-----
the phone cut off. On the other end Adria heard a sound like something falling. "Oh god. Oh no. Oh no. Oh no."
David raced home. He wasnt feeling good anyways- the headache was increasing. oh god- he pulled out an aspirin-----woooosh----bang bang bang----for a moment- time stopped. then swirled into oblivion. things became normal again. thankyou god-
Adria was at Lilith's side...talking to her although most of what she said came out as nonsense. She knew only David could help her now. But finally she did the only thing she knew in her best judgement to do- she called her doctor.
"Hello. Mr. Julian...I'm calling on behalf of one of your patients--Lilith Mieser...um I think she has taken an overdose...she's...OH My god. she's she's on the floor. Oh my god. Lilith!"
For a moment, lilith had been left in a sweet peaceful silence- only she thought she heard the ringing, the ringing of the telephone...then nothing...blackness consumed her. then she heard more...a few words-
"Help! Adria! I'm sorry! No I dont mean that..."
She thought she hadnt been heard- in fact, this is what she had been screaming all the while they rushed her away.
