Online publishing sites are becoming quite popular these days. A quick Google search can turn up quite a few of them. Then its simply a matter of finding one that suits you.
You might check with local colleges and universities in your area. They often have literary journals that are open to area residents.
You can also do the rounds of what one of my friends likes to call the "artsy-fartsy" section of town. The little downtown revival areas that have little bookshops, coffee houses, music shops, etc. Those places are usually tied in with the local artistic community, and would have information regarding small, local publications and how to contact them.
Finally, there are publications sold which are essentially national catalogues of publications of poetry and short fiction. You can pick those up easily at a bookstore. They provide names of publications, the styles they publish, and contact information to get their writers' guidelines.
The best thing to do is to get ahold of a copy of whatever publication you're submitting to, and read it. That way, when you send in your submission, your introduction letter can make commentary on their publication. Editors always like to know that a potential author has taken the time to read their publication. A mention of something specific you enjoyed in their latest issue is good. | thank you shadowborn...

i'll open this up to others to also share their experiences, as i know there have been those who've both been published or are in the process of publishing, let us know what works, versus what you've discovered is best to steer away from, please? i have yet to get published....but need to try.....i need to find something akin to my style.....or genre....some here said i have somewhat of a "splatterpunk" type of style....but um, something i got is this: Jeff Herman's Guide To Book Publishers, Editors, & Literary Agents 2004
itz a big thick book that has damn near every place one can get published....
it goes in great detail what each publishing house or organization wants and how to submit your work.......
but, as for me...i'm currently workin' on a novel and am thinkin' of sending that....but, i thought about sending some poetry and short stories into literary magazines, but wonder if it would just be better to try and submit my work to get it into book form.... I was masturbating

i find the problem with novels, they take too long to write, and i've had several different people suggest going the short story route...allowing you time to get the novel ready to submit, and perhaps building a name for yourself in the meantime...*shrugs* i heard that's how it worked for stephen king.
Do you think if anyone wrote a famous author, they'd offer publishing advice? To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. | |

actually, i think they would....um, in once of those Publisher Guides they had a huge section of authors offering advice, and it said you could write them....one of which was Stephen King....
but um, actually, Stephen King used to write like, for his university or whatever and that was it, then he wrote the novel Carrie.....he threw it in the trash.....his wife got it out of the trash and sent in......since then, itz all been good for the man....
but hmmm.....see, i wonder if i should just like submit my short stories into a magazine or just go the "collection" route....i dunno.....
as for the novel....indeed, they take long, and you get kinda frustrated....at least i am....the one i'm writing i wrote porlly 6 chapters for, read it, hated it, and thus decided to re-do it......i think itz better this time around, but itz painfully slow.....and at the same time, i get all these other ideas of things i'd like to write, but i refuse to do them cuz i wanna finish this....i don't care if itz total shit, i'd just like to get published.....and then see where i can go from there... i've been frantically searching the net for publishing info.....i don't really know what to do, but um....i stumbled across this site and thought it might help you jordyn since you like to write erotic stuff.... http://www.erotica-readers.com/ERA/index.htm
that's their home page http://www.erotica-readers.com/ERA/G/BLShorts.htm
this is the page i think might help, it has a collection of erotic short story publishers (on the left and right side of the screen....just pick and click) who are seeking submissions..... I was masturbating

I've been trying to get published for two years now. rejection after rejection. i spiralled into a year long breakdown...but that's another story.
Getting published is fucking hard. That psychological horror novel i had painstakingly worked on (i showed a chapter from it here of df) is now in the drawer, after being rejected by every single agent out there.
I can only hope my other one goes better. To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

no, that novel is finished now, as well as when i sent it out. from the scant info i got back, it seemed unmarketable or something.
and actually, it doesn't have to be finished. a lot of writers do that. To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

oddly, i could never write short stories. i'm always planning/writing novels that are obscure. hopefully though, the novel i'm circulating to publishers right now should have more success. it's an erotic comedy/fairytale To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. for now, it's local. you'll find that international agents and publishers rarely trust newbs from another country. usually there are local agents that link with overseas ones, if the potential is there To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. well....since it seems like i'm mainly the only one who is tryin' to research all of this.....i found out sumtin' interestin' i thought i might share....
so i was reading up on THE RIGHTS publishers will buy.....as it turns out, if you write sumtin' and can provide it in tangible form (i.e. on paper, or disk, or audio, etc.) you automatically retain the copyrights......but anywho, so it turns out if you send out your story or whatever to say a short story magazine, they gotta buy certain rights.....most common is the North American First Time Serial Rights..........but, it turns out, if you post a story elsewhere....like, here for example, then it no longer can be considered First Time material.....as itz been published before......thus, it might get fuckered with the publisher who wishes to buy it....
but, i think if you yourself actually register your work and retain the copyrights, then itz all good.....but, i'm not sure....
gah, this is all so confusing!!!! I was masturbating
