| Early Sunsets Over Monroeville Well what can I say about Monroeville? It’s the perfect place to live. The grass is always greener on the other side. Well this is the other side.
I’m Jesse by the way. My mom and I are very close. See my dad died when I was seven. We didn’t get much bonding time. After all he was sixty-seven when he died. I sure miss him though.
Anyways back to talking about the town. Its small with one family owned store, one gas station, and one interstate going right thru it. Let’s not forget those wonderful mountains. I have a real great view from my back yard. Really Monroeville is rather disserted. But everyone knows every one. And everyone is nice to one another. I have lived here my whole life and I have never met a cross person. My mother calls it luck. I say that it is the perfect place to live. Kind of like old television shows. That’s all they play here, old TV shows. My favorite show is The Munsters. It’s about monsters like vampires and werewolves. It’s not like anything would ever happen like that here. The population is only three hundred.
There’s not much to say about Monroeville. That is till they let the outsiders move in. Not all of them are bad. Like Rose for instance. She is beautiful. She has dark brown hair and beautiful Hazel eyes. She is the most amazing person I have met in a while.
Well I am almost seventeen and I have never felt this way about a girl before. But I know she wouldn’t give me a chance. My friends: Melvin, Philip, And Kyle, like her as well. If I were she I would pick Philip. He is nice and caring. And if I were gay I would pick him as well.
Well time for school I guess I’m at the bus stop and the bus is arriving. I have to say that school can’t keep my attention. I am always straying from the lesson to think about things. Mainly to think about what it would be like to live with a vampire or a werewolf. Or what I would ever say to Rose.
Rose walked up beside me. Wow she looks great today. She is wearing a gothic style dress. Its amazing and her pale completion. Oh no she saw me staring.
“Hey Jesse!” Rose said.
“Heh…hi Rose,” I think I just blushed. I sound like a schoolgirl now. Worryin’ about me blushing and junk.
“So what are you doing after school tonight?” Rose asked
I looked at my feet, “Uh..Well probably nothin’.” She smiled
“Well Boringness, if you could stop by my house after school and help me, as a neighbor of course, unpack my belongings? It’s only been a week since the big move and the rest of my family is unpacked. So will ya help me?” Rose smiled again.
I looked up and grinned, “Sure I’ll help ya Rose.” She smiled and walked to the bus.
On the bus ride to school I thought about the conversation I had had with Rose. I was happy, hand so was she.
My day at school was uneventful. Save for the frog that Jimmy Ganlend put on the science teacher’s chair. She ended up sitting on it. That was good. At lunch I ate with Melvin and Philip. Kyle was studying for his geometry test.
The bus arrived so I got in. On the bus ride home Rose sat with me. We talked about tonight. “So when do you want me to come over?” I asked.
She grinned and said, “Immediately.” We both laughed. I nodded afterward and smiled. A chunk of my shaggy hair slipped in front of my face. Rose pushed it away with her pointer finger. “You have such beautiful green eyes.” I blushed again and thanked her. Rose’s eyes were one to match. They were beautiful green that turned to a brownish-yellow when she is excited. They were Greenish now. I stared into them trying to find her thoughts. She blushed and turned away. Finally I made HER blush!
The bus ride ended at our stop. We got off the bus of course. I turned and headed for home. Rose spoke, “Jesse? Are you gonna come over still?” I turned around.
“If you still want me to.” I said. She smiled and nodded, “Okay see ya in a few Rose.” I turned and ran inside the house dropping my stuff at the front door. Mom wasn’t home. That was unlike her. I wonder where she is? Oh well. I will leave her a note. So I did.
Mom,
Went to help Rose unpack. Be home by nine.
Love, Jesse
I stuck it on the table and ran out of the house leaving all the doors unlocked for mom. She would be home soon, I guess. She is probably shopping or something.
I ran to Rose’s house. It was about three houses down. Rose was sitting outside waiting for me. She had changed her clothes. Now she wore jean shorts and a T-shirt. “Come on Jesse!” She cheered me on. I stopped running when I got to her lawn. I cut across it hoping that she wouldn’t mind. She didn’t say anything about it so I figured it was okay. She smiled and stood up. I reached her porch slowly. But when I did she took my hand and led me into the Kitchen.
“Muttie, This is Jesse. He lives three doors down from us.” Rose’s mom turned around.
She was a stout woman. Short and lanky. Her face was fair but not pretty. Her eyes shot thru me like a bullet. I looked at my feet. “You must be Julie Rastic’s son, right? She walked towards me. Rose let go of my hand and I felt my whole body freeze over.
I gulped, “Yes Ma’am.”
She lifted my head with her pointer finger. “You have beautiful green eyes, you know. They defiantly weren’t wasted either. You are very charming.” She turned back to her cooking and said, “Have fun!”
I felt my body get warm again. That was like Déjà vu or something. Rose grabbed my hand and drug me off up stairs. I followed her closely trying not to get lost. It wasn’t a big house but it was very old and eerie.
Her room was the second one on the left. It was a nice room facing the sun in the evening. Her bed was in a corner. She walked over and sat on it. I stopped in the doorway. She patted the empty side of bed beside her. I walked over and sat down. She took my hand. “Jesse? If I tell you something you promise not to tell?” Rose asked. I nodded slowly. She smiled and leaned closer to me. She whispered in my ear. I was shocked by her secret. It was an amazing one at that.
She got up and walked over to a box. “You can unpack this box. I’ll put it up.” I got up and started unpacking the box.
In the box were small trinkets. There was a jewel box. I opened the small item carefully. Inside was a diamond ring. “You like it?” Rose startled me.
“Yeah, It’s pretty amazing.” I said still a little shocked. “How old is it?”
She walked to me from the other side of the room. “I dunno. I got it when I was born. But it has been past thru the family line of girls.” I acknowledged what she said but knew that it had to be about one hundred years old. I put the ring back into the box and handed it to Rose. She grasped it and walked it to her windowsill. She placed the trinket on the corner slanted at an angle so only one of the corners touched the window panel. I watched intently as she did so.
I reached back into the box. I pulled out a piece of cloth that had something in it. I unrolled the cloth wanting to know what it was. A small locket dropped to the floor. I quickly picked it up. I fiddled with it for a moment until I noticed Rose staring at me. “Sorry.” She walked back over to me and took my hands in hers.
“Don’t be. You wanna know more about me I know that. And I you too. But let’s get these boxes finished and we will have supper. My muttie is makin’ Pork chops. Ya like those?” She smiled.
I smiled back and nodded. I did like pork chops. They were really good when Mom made them. Before supper we finished six boxes.
At the dinner table I felt like an outsider. Her father didn’t like me I could tell. Her mother was very friendly and enjoyed me being there. And her brother, who is only five, couldn’t have care less. They table was eerily silent as well.
After supper I helped clean the dishes and the table. Rose’s Father snared at me the whole time. After the table was clean, Rose said, “Come mon’ We have six more boxes and its already dark. You might not get home till after ten!” She laughed. I did too.
“That’s fine. I have no homework and my Mom wasn’t home when I got home earlier. I left her a note.” I said. She took my hand and led me upstairs to her room. “Wow Its already eight o’ clock?” She sighed and nodded.
We unpacked most of the boxes that were okay for me to unpack. Around nine we were finished. We walked outside.
“Well I guess I’ll see you tomorrow, Jesse.” Rose said as she kissed my cheek.
I smiled and said, “Yeah, tomorrow. Night Rose.” She went inside. I turned and ran down the street to my house.
All the lights were out. I walked in the front door. “Mom?” I called. No answer. “Mom are you here?” Still no answer. “I guess she’s not home.” I turned on the living room lights and searched the house. No one was there but me. I went to my bedroom and changed into my nightclothes. By that time it was around ten-thirty. I decided to go to bed. “Maybe she will be home by tomorrow?” I thought out loud.
In the morning I woke up, of course. I walked thru the house. No one there. “Heh…Mom’s still not home.” I said aloud. I got ready for school and walked to the bus stop.
Rose was there. Waiting for me, I guess, because when she saw me she waved hyperactively. I waved back but not hyperactively. “What’s wrong, Jesse?” Rose asked.
I sighed, “It’s my Mom. She…. she didn’t come home last night.” I looked toward the ground. Rose sighed.
“I’m sure she just got caught up at work or something, Jesse.” Rose tried to reassure me. It didn’t work. “Me Poppie gets caught up in work all the time. She probably needed to stay after and help.” Rose stated.
I nodded, “She works at the diner, Rose. They don’t stay open all night.”
Rose turned away. “I…I just thought..” She broke off into sobs of tears. I tried to console her but the bus arrived.
On the bus she sat in her own seat. She didn’t talk to anyone. She just sat there. Crying. The worse part was that I did it to her. What could I do for her?
Thru the day she didn’t talk to me and when I tried to talk to her she would walk away.
The day sucked. Between my mother missing and Rose being mad at me there wasn’t much to live for. When I came home no one was there to cook for me or to console me when I needed it the most…like now. Where was Mom?
I cooked mac and cheese for supper and went to bed. I couldn’t sleep knowing that mom wasn’t here and that Rose was mad at me. My head ached. A throbbing sound. Like a heart that was beating outside of the body. How could I fix this?
Thru a night of tossing and turning, cold sweats, and loneliness, the sun arose. I got up and made some hot coffee. The one thing I do know how to make. I jumped in the shower after drinking my coffee first, of course. Then I walked to the bus stop.
Rose was there. I wondered if she was still mad at me. Hopefully not. She looked up. When she saw mw coming she smiled and waved. I guess she wasn’t mad at me still. I waved back. She dropped her belongings and ran over to me. She leaped and landed right on me. With her arms around my neck, we fell to the ground.
“I’m sorry I was so…” I cut her off.
“Cold?” I suggested.
She grimaced, “ Yes, cold. I’m sorry.” I nodded.
“It’s okay.” I stated.
“Did your Muttie come home yet?” Rose asked. I shook my head.
“Maybe I should go to the cops?” I suggested.
Rose smiled. “I’m sure she will come home today. Just give her some time, Jesse.”
The bus arrived soon after. The bus ride with Rose was the best. “Hey, you wanna go for a walk after school today?” Rose asked.
“No..” I said sarcastically, “Of course I wanna go.” We smiled at each other.
I got off the bus at school. Rose and I said our goodbyes for the hundredth time and went our separate ways. I turned the corner and ran into a real big guy. “What the hell do you think your doing?” I looked up to his face.
“I was walking. I’m sorry. I’ll just be on my way now. I said and walked around him. He shoved me back.
“I don’t think so punk.” The guy said. He punched me making me gasp for air. Another blow hit me. One in the stomach. One in the mouth. Dozens more coming at me from all angles. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t scream. I fell to the ground, gasping for air. I was in an uncomforting daze. Still being hit by the punches and kicks, blood gushing out of my mouth, I looked up to see Rose running around the corner.
“Jesse!” I heard Rose call. “Jesse breathe, Jesse!” She started crying. I could see. It was a blurry vision but it was still beautiful. A tear dropped onto my cheek as Rose leaned over my limp body. My last vision was of her.
I woke in the nurse’s office. My lip bloody and my head pounding. I tried to sit up but I couldn’t move. The nurse was sitting next to me. She didn’t look at me. Everything was silent.
“Don’t hurt yourself now, dear. How are you doing?” The nurse asked.
“My head hurts and it’s hard to sit up.” I sighed in pain. She laughed loudly making my head pound even harder.
“You got beat pretty bad, Jesse. You might even be dead if it wasn’t for that girl. Now, You just lay there and rest.” She got up and got me some ice. I thought of the girl. Rose. Where was she now? Was she worried? Is she okay? The nurse came back and set the bag of ice on my throbbing head. It felt good.
“Where is Rose?” I asked.
“Rose? Oh yes, the girl. She is in class. You really owe her your life. She has came here to check on you after every hour. She must really care for you.” The nurse replied.
“I know. I care for her too. What time is it?” asked I.
“Oh about Nine-Thirty. I tried calling home but no one answered. Is you mother home or at work?”
I raised my head. “She..she hasn’t came home in two days. I don’t know where she is.”
The nurse sighed. “What about your father?” She asked.
“He’s dead. Has been for years.” Replied I .
“Have you any grandparents around her?”
“I dunno. My mother never really talked about her parents and never said anything about my father’s parents either.” I said pitifully. She just stared blankly at me. A few moments later she stood and walked over to the phone. She dialed some numbers and waited. A few minutes later she hung up the phone and sighed.
“I really feel sorry for you. All you have is that girl. And she isn’t all that great. She’s not pretty. She’s not smart. You’re never going to make it in this town. You have to live up to certain standards of beauty and neither you nor her have it. I sat up painfully though. What was she talking about?
“Don’t you talk about Rose that way!” I shouted. I slowly stood and walked towards the door. The pain was intense but I had to get out of there. Something about her wasn’t right.
“Where do you think your going?” She asked. I turned around. She looked up from her position in the chair. Her eyes were a bright yellow. Demonic-looking eyes that pierced thru me as she stared. This wasn’t the same nurse as before. I turned back around and hobbled out of the door. I made it half way down the hallway when I heard Rose’s voice coming from behind me.
“Rose!” I turned around and stood against the wall. “The nurse is…is…possessed or something. We have to get out of here.” I took her hand but it wasn’t her hand. It was cold, clammy, like the hand of the dead. I looked down. Much to my surprise the hand was gray and had rotting flesh on it. I let go immediately. What the hell was going on here? I looked up at the so-called Rose to find that it was a gremlin-type thing. With eyes of yellow and teeth as sharp as daggers it stared reluctantly at me waiting to pounce. Its pointy ears perked up as if listening to the thoughts in my head.
With eyes of yellow and teeth as sharp as daggers it stared reluctantly at me waiting to pounce. Its pointy ears perked up as if listening to the thoughts in my head. “You’ve got the gift and I want it. Give it to me.” The beast said. What? What is the gift?
It had me cornered. My back was against the wall and its bony, winged arms trapped me on both sides. If only I had my full strength. I can’t do anything being injured as I am. Some one turned onto the hallway that I was in. She screamed at the sight of the monster. The beast backed off of me and went for her. I ran when it turned the corner.
The school was empty. The office was disserted. I looked at the time. Ten-fifteen. What class did Rose have now? I thought back to when she showed me her schedule, “See I have math fourth period. It’s gonna be hard.” I remembered.
I went down the math hallway heading towards Rose’s class. It was only three doors down from where I was but if that thing came around the corner I would surely be killed. One thing wandered my mind still. Why did it attack that girl when It had me right there? Still I was thankful. What was this gift it had talked about? My mind filled with questions that seemed to have no answer.
The hallway was eerily silent and very uneasing to the shocking paranoia that overcame me. When I reached the door, I quickly knocked and went inside. The class gapped at me awkwardly save for Rose, who was ecstatic to see me. “I need Rose to go to the office with me, sir.” I said to the teacher. He sighed and nodded her out the door.
“Should I take my things?” Rose asked. I nodded. She packed her things into a small bag and came with me.
I peeked out the door to see if the coast was clear. Thankfully it was. We walked out. “Aren’t you in pain, Jesse?” Rose asked. I frantically shushed her quiet. “What’s going on, Jesse?” Asked Rose.
“Just be quiet now. I’ll tell you when we are safe.” I whispered.
“Safe? Jesse, what’s going on?”
I quieted her again. We walked toward the exit. Within three minutes of spying around corners and sneaking past teachers we reached the door and ran out. “Jesse, Where are you taking me? Should I trust you anymore?” Rose asked.
“Rose, Something is not right here. I am taking you to the mou….” I cringed in pain. “There is something…something evil going on here. I saw it…A monster. It killed a girl. I’m not lying Rose. It was as real as you and me.”
Rose sighed, “I believe you, Jesse, but I haven’t seen or heard anything. Now let’s go back to the nurse.” Rose took my hand. We walked to the office. “Heh… no one’s here.” Rose stated. I stood in the doorway with my arms folded in a ‘I told ya so’ kind of way. Rose walked around the corner. She opened the principle’s office door and screamed. Sparked by the scream I hobbled around the corner to find a trail of blood and Rose huddled in a ball.
“Rose? What happened?!” I asked in a panic.
She lifted her head and rubbed her sobbing eyes, “He…they all, all of them are dead.” Rose started sobbing even harder. I hugged her tightly. She leaned into my bruised chest. I leaned forward and peeked through the door.
It was a horrible sight. The office ladies were in shreds and all over the place. The walls were blood-filled. “What? What the hell happened here?” I asked
Rose turned and leaned back into my chest. She clung to me tightly. The blood was starting to seep into the small hallway. “Rose, let’s go.” I said.
“Where to?” she spoke through the sobs.
“My house. We have to go somewhere. My dad told me, right before he died, that something horrible would happen to this town. He told me that I should take the one other person I love and we should go to the mountains and hide. And that I would lose someone that I loved dearly. I think the one person that I…I lost was my mother.”
Rose sighed, “Yes, let’s go then. To the mountains. But first we must go to our houses and get together some belongings.” I nodded.
She got up and held my hand tightly as we walked down the blood-filled hallway.
I turned first, and it was a good thing I did, one of the demons stalked past the window. “Get down!” I whispered sternly. We both shot down behind a counter. The demon tried to open the door and succeeded. We sat there, quivering. The counter covered all but a few inches of my shoes. We were squished but hopefully the thing wouldn’t see us.
Rose peeked up above the counter. I grabbed her back down. “Don’t do that!” I whispered sternly. The demon walked to the counter, peeked over, and walked down the hall. He dragged a body behind it, a girl’s body, the girl that had screamed in the hallway. She was dead now.
The creature squawked and I heard it devouring he corpse. Rose quenched at every bite she heard. “Let’s go.” I whispered. I slowly got up. Then I helped Rose up. I looked around the corner. The creature was still ripping at the meat. We ran out of the open door.
A half an hour later we were at my house packing things. “I’m going to go to my house and get a few books. Remember the secret that I told you Jesse? Well now is when it comes in handy.” Rose kissed me lightly and walked out of the house. I sighed. I remember the secret. What a secret to have as well. She is so brilliant, so perfect, and for her to have a secret like that is.. well not right. I remembered what she had said to me, “I’m immortal. Nothing can stop me from being with you.”
I ransacked a couple of my mom’s old chests while Rose was getting her things. In one of the chests I found a box that said Jesse on the front. I was a wooden box with my named engraved into it. It had to be quite old. I set it on my mother’s bed and opened it. Inside was a letter. Its read:
Dear son,
By the time you are reading this you will be old enough to realize that your love is in danger. Her name is Rose. If you haven’t met her yet then put the box away and forget about it for a while until you do. I bet you are wondering why I, of all people, know this information. Well son I have premonitions. I see the future. You have no powers known to your mother nor I.
If you are reading this in a time of crisis, as in your mother has gone missing and there might be some kind of monster after you, take the gun, Rose, and the three silver bullets up to the mountains. If you follow the map you will have a safe hiding spot and a home to live. I will not say anymore about what is going to happen to you or Rose. But you must go now.
Love forever,
Your Father
I looked into the box. Sure enough there was a map, three bullets, and a silver pistol inside the box. I picked it up carefully. It was beautiful. “Jesse? Are you ready? Something is in the sky. Its flying over the houses. It looks like that thing at the…” her sentence was broke off when she walked into the room. “What’s that?”
“It’s a pistol. My father left it for me. Here its all in the letter.” I handed the letter to her as I admired the pistol’s gleaming radiance. She took the letter and read it softly.
“Jesse, You know what this means right?” I shook my head, “It means that we are meant to be together. That something horrible is going to happen here and we have to hide from it.”
“Is that so? Well we must go. What were you saying as you came in?” I asked.
“Oh, well there is something flying overhead and it looks like one of those things that was at the school.” Rose said.
“Ah, we’ll cut through the back yard and into the forest. That is what the map says anyways. We better move fast before the demon attacks the house. That’s the last thing I want, to be locked in a house with a flesh eating demon trying to kill me.”
Rose slightly giggled and nodded. I grabbed the bullets and shoved them into my pockets. The pistol was still clenched in my hand as I grabbed for Rose’s waist. I pulled her close and kissed her on the lips. “To the end my love.” I said. She smiled and grabbed my hand.
“To the end.” We held hands as we walked out of my small house and into my back yard. The back yard had many trees so the monster probably wouldn’t find us. We kept very quiet for a long time. We were enjoying probably the last moments of our lives that we would never have to worry about hiding. About an hour later we stumbled upon a body. “Jesse, Its her.” Rose said as she stood from the body. I knew it. She, meaning my mother, was dead. She was feasted upon. I started to cry softly. Rose hugged me. “Its okay. I am here for you.” I hugged her tight and thanked her by kissing her cheek. She smiled.
We walked away from my mother’s deceased body toward the mountain’s edge. It took us another hour to get there. But we were in a clearing. I looked up at the sky. “Rose! We have to get out of here now.”
“Why?” Rose asked.
“Look up.”
“Oh shit. Let’s run.”
I nodded and shoved the pistol in my pocket along with the bullets and map. We ran from tree to tree, hiding, trying not to get spotted. Rose lagged behind a little every once in a while. I would tell her to hurry and encourage her to carry on. Soon we hit an area with no trees. A clearing of sorts. I got the pistol out of my pocket. Rose clung to my arm, afraid for her life. “I’m not going to let anything happen to you. I promise.” I said. In a flash one of the many demons landed in front of us. Its screeched and jumped at me. I lurched back and fell over. It screeched again. “You have something I want, Jesse Rastic. Give it to me.” Its said in a raspy voice.
“Never!” I cried out not knowing what it was that he really wanted. Rose started to sob.
“I’m scared Jesse.”
I pulled a bullet from my pocket. I loaded the gun. I took aim and fired. The bullet went through the demons heart but did not kill it. I got up and grabbed Rose’s arm. “Run.” I said as I took off running.
We ran like there was no tomorrow because if we didn’t, for us, there probably wouldn’t have been another tomorrow. I let go of Rose’s tender hand when we reached the cliff face. She knew as well as I did that we had to climb it. It was narrow and short. Maybe a eight feet from the ground. It wasn’t that hard. But still we had to get up it without being attacked by the creatures. It was getting dark also. The creatures seem more active at night then in the daylight as well. I started up the cliff face first. It took me a short time to get up over the edge. Rose climbed the face fairly easily with no doubt that she had done it before. “So the shack should be just around the corner. I’m gonna go check it out. You stay here for a few minutes until I say it’s okay to come.” I said. She nodded and looked toward the sky. “Don’t worry. I won’t let anything happen to you.” I turned around the edge of the cliff and into a crease in the mountain.
In the crease was a small shack like house. Built of scraps of wood it didn’t look like it would hold up any longer. I opened the small wooden door and looked around. There was a bed, kitchen chair, table, and a fireplace. It was small but cozy. I jumped at the sound of a murderous scream coming from the direction of Rose. “Oh No! Rose!” I yelled as I ran out of the door. I turned the edge of the cliff again to find Rose limp and barely breathing. “Rose? What happened?” I didn’t expect her to answer me. I fell to the ground and held her limp body in my arms. Her blood covered my clothes. I sobbed. “Why did it happen to you?”
“Jesse…It was my fault. I…I didn’t stay hidden. Don’t blame it on yourself.” She said softly. I kissed her sweet lips one last time before I picked her up and carried her to the shack.
I laid her on the old bed and sat beside her. I cried hysterically. She coughed up blood and gasped for breath. “Jesse, there is something I want you to know.” She coughed, “I love you.” She took her last breath. She was gone. Trapped in all of these mountains I thought we would be safe. I cried more and held her dead body in my arms tightly. “Why? Why not me?” I shouted.
After long hours of crying and wondering, I fell asleep in the bed with Rose’s body. In my dreams everything was back to normal. Mother was still alive and Rose was just Rose. I kissed her a million times over. And when I awoke I found myself dieing inside. Now that Rose’s death was setting in I was more lost than ever. I got up and started a fire in the fireplace and sat in the wooden table chair. My thoughts were mixed up in the flames. I stared teary-eyed at the burning embers.
“Jesse.” I heard Rose’s voice. I turned around to see Rose standing by the open door. It wasn’t Rose for Rose’s corpse still lay limp across the bed.
“Go away! Can’t you see that I am in pain? I just lost the love of my life and you want to try to trick me with your ignorance!” I pulled the gun out and loaded it.
“But Jesse, It really is me.” The imposter Rose said. She fell to the ground. “I love you Jesse.” I pulled the gun up to her forehead. Her eyes. They weren’t the lovely hazel they were before. Now they were vacant, stained with the glow of death. I pulled the trigger. A shot blew up but no damage was done. The imposter Rose slowly disintegrated and disappeared.
One bullet left to go. After about a week the demons stopped coming after me. I buried Rose’s body in the mountain rocks and visited her everyday. I cried for hours on end. Why did it have to be her?
One month went by fast and I now was tired of being alive. I didn’t eat. I didn’t sleep. I just sat there, thinking about Rose. Thinking about what it would have been like if Rose were to have lived and I would have died. So many unanswered questions were awoken by the death of my love.
After living on my own for two months, scrounging for food, and grieving, I became very suicidal. I started hitting myself. Touching hot embers to my skin. Also standing out side when the demons came to get their nightly prey. My life was a living hell that burned fiercely and there was no way to put it out.
One month later, I turned seventeen. A hard three months living on after Rose’s death. Living my life alone with only a faded picture of Rose and I, with bloodstains and tear drops on it. Why didn’t I protect her better? I started to sob. This gun is my only friend now. Or is it the enemy? I don’t care anymore. One bullet left, just like dad said. Is this the end or the beginning? For dad it was the beginning. For me it will be the end. These monsters will never stop coming. Why should I fight when I have no one to fight for? Why should I live if I have nothing to live for? Rose is dead. I killed her. With this revolver I put her demon out of its misery. And was I wrong for loving such a thing? Was I wrong for killing her once the demons got a hold of her soul? And her last words, how hard it was. “I love you, Jesse.” The words I had been dieing to hear. And when I finally did I shot her between the eyes. Or was it really her?
I pondered the questions for a few minutes as I paced the floor. Screeching of the monsters grew louder yet. The come in waves nowadays. Taking twenty people and dropping their prey’s heads or limbs off over the shack where Rose and I hid together. My memories defeated me for I only have memories of her. There is no room in this hell. There is no room in the next. I loaded the pistol with the last bullet I had left. I put it to my head. “This is the end.” I dropped to my knees. I sobbed. I pulled the trigger and everything went dark. | Published by | | | Registered User Join Date: Jun 2007 Location: Missouri
