Depp is "Sweeny Todd", a man deprived of his family and unjustly sent to prison, who emerges to seek revenge on those responsible for his fate. He is the Demon Barber of Fleet Street who 'shaved heads of gentlemen who never thereafter were heard from again.'
Mr.Lovett, played by Helena Bonham Carter of Fight Club fame, is Sweeny's amorous accomplice who creates diabolical meat pies (you have to get rid of the bodies somehow...).

The release date is for 21st of December of this year. Tim Burton and Johnny Depp team up once again for yet another masterpiece!
I hope it's good. I was sorely disappointed by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, so Burton's gonna have to come up with a winner to get back on my good side.

I'm confident that this will be great. The lyrics for the musicals on the official website are excellent. The atmosphere is very Sleepy Hollow-ish. The colors and cast are very well picked. I think we may have a winner on our um.. scissorhands (bahdum dum tshh)
Interesting considering I just got home from the London Dungeon, which has a section on Sweeny Todd and a replica of the pie shop. I can't wait to see it.
I saw the taped version of the Broadway cast doing this. It's a good musical. I enjoyed it. It looks like the team did a good job of this from what the previews show. Although I don't think Johnny has the musical prowess of Broadway if you know what I mean. He's alright though.
Not really considering in a film, acting is more important than musical prowess. He's on-key and that's what matters. Besides, stage acting is so over-the-top in comparison to film and television that I think something might be lost had they hired one of those fairy fuck theater guys.

True enough. I still wish he could sing better though... Good enough though - story is still good.

Plus, when's the last time Burton did a movie without Johnny Depp in the starring role?

he is a great theatre actor. I saw him sing before and it was goodie.
Yeah, but I'm so used to seeing him do the "villan" thing that I forgot what else he can do....it was one of those surreal moments in time; at least for me, anyway...
