I saw "Memento" (written & directed by Christopher Nolan, starring Carrie-Anne Moss, Guy Pearce, & Joe Pantoliano) today, and it was spellbinding.
It's a sort of revenge thriller with more than its share of surprises. The major surprise is that the story's told backwards, and so the last scene, a brutal, climactic killing for which we have no context, is what we see first.
Fittingly, the film's Web site is otnemem.com.
Because of the sequence of the scenes it's important to pay attention, but the film was really well-done.
If you do see this movie, prepare yourself for the best kind of mind-fuck.
The film is about a man named Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce) who has what he describes as "a condition." His problem is that he lacks any and all short-term memory. Whatever happens to him, no matter how intense, it is impossible for him to recall it only ten minutes later. However, his long-term memory tells him that he has witnessed the brutal rape and murder of his wife, and the bulk of the movie's action is occupied with his efforts to identify and track down her killer. Much of the film is narrated by Leonard's thoughts, in voiceover, as we watch him shower, wake up in unfamiliar hotel rooms, and so on. (some of these scenarios are hilarious, others terrifying)
I'm still a little puzzled over a few parts of "Memento," -- but the movie boasts brilliant performance and an exquisitely imaginative screenplay.
"...Crying salty tears are the souls who have lost...
Entombed with the damned, immortality at a cost...
Shadowed demons rise, stretching across the land...
A pain-filled death delivered by their own sire's hand...
"As the clock strikes twelve and the moon shines red,
It has been foretold to be the time of the dead...
Not a soul shall escape once the beast has awoken...
A deadly black raven marks this evil villain's token..."
