Just bought a 7 disc DVD collection for £20!!!

What do you guys think of the whole Nightmare thing?

Personally, I don't find them scarey, more black comedy - but absolutely brilliant and a pioneer of their time. Without Freddy, there would be no 'Scream' series and no 'I know What you did Last Summer'.

Am I being nostalgic, or is Freddy truely brilliant?

Only the first one was good enough to be considered as a horror,the rest is blewgh.

I watched the first one first in the DVD set, after watching it years ago, and it looked kinda dated, but still funny. I've still to see Freddy's New Nightmare, I think I've seen all the others.

I fucking hate Jason though.

Yeah i saw Freddy vs Jason,i only liked the end battle,that was the only thing good about it.

Yea - they are stupid, which is kinda why I like em. I recommend English horror films if you want grit and humour though (Dog Soldiers, Sean of the Dead), or Japanese originals if you prefer really disturbed stuff (The Ring for example).

never was into Freddy....or Jason.....i'm a Michael Myers kid myself....the Halloween flicks are ingenious....well, the first 4 (excluding Halloween 3: Season of the Witch)....and H20 was purdy good too i thought, minus the plot-holes and whatnot....

Freddy is awesome, I can't help but love the guy. Jason's still the top dog, however, when it comes to kill-count. He's the master of killing.

I wouldn't say all horror films are this way at all. It doesn't adequately describe The Exorcist or The Hills Have Eyes (another Craven film). Hell, try applying this to Near Dark or even the classic Night of the Living Dead.

All good shows, none follow that formula. I think that you've gotten stuck in the formulaic, slasher-movie section of the horror film genre.

but scream was basically a serious lampoon (is that an oxymoron) of the slasher. it shouldn't really count.

it doesn't.....

slasher flicks are basically 80's based horror films.....i'm not a big fan of slasher flicks myself (except for the Halloween series).....

i'll take 70's horror and exploitation films and 90's-modern day psychological horror flicks anyday.....

but slasher flicks have their moments.....basically said moment is when you're havin' a small "horror film festival" in your basement, entertaining some friends, and you got yourself a shit ton of popcorn.....

Scream should count. It's a movie that knows what it is... like Kill Bill.

The Exorcist, is the horror film that set the benchmark for all others. All in all, Horror movies are comedies, if you ask me.. k.Thnx.Bye...

To me that's like saying Not Another Teen Movie is a Hughesian film.

Although that is, in fact, what it was trying to make fun of for the most part.

Scream went through several studios who all wanted to make it as a comedy, flat out... like a spoof film (just like Not Another Teen Movie). Kevin Williamson wanted Scream to keep its dark camedy, while also keeping its serious tone. The film is a modern slasher flick, but it's not a comedy.

I Know What You Did Last Summer is also a modern slasher and not a comedy. These films attempt to be more character driven and contain more thrills ("jump" moments, which Scream made fun of) than your average "80s slasher" film. Scream was a more intelligent thriller, but simply because, like Kill Bill, it knew what it was, did not make it a comedy (just like Kill Bill's style did not keep it from being an action film).

Not Another Teen Movie was openly a spoof of the Hughs-type films that inspired it, and was advertised as such. Scream was a horror movie with self-referencing genre humor.

awe, see....now i'm with errant.....i don't think you can label Scream and Who Gives a Fuck What You Did Last Summer as slasher flicks simply because they follow some of the standard "slasher" rules....movie of this variety are crossing genres, thus aren't the garden variety of the 80's slasher films.....itz like processed food versus home grown......the look and feel might be the same, but the taste is completely different.....

yes, a potato is a potato at its central core, despite what type of potato it is.......which is essentially the very definition of the term "genre"......Nightmare On Elm Street and Scream are both, at their central core, "horror" films......

however, an idaho potato isn't the same as a russian potato now is it....a home grown potato isn't the same as a processed potato........thus, Scream isn't the same type of horror film that Nightmare On Elm Street is......they're both horror films, but not the same kind.....one is solely encompassing the very term "slasher flick" with a mix of comedy (Freddy's always been one funny mother fucker, though his comedy came out more so with the later flicks), the other is slasher spoof of sorts mixed with some comedy, but is more characteristic of psychological horror.....

but, i guess it all boils down to this.....you say po-TAY-toe....i say po-TAH-toe
