Join Date: Jun 2007 | I need some movie recomendations -
06-21-07
I've recently decided that I should at least try to get into foreign films. I'm not sure of a reason for this, maybe because I saw Battle Royal and Pan's Labyrinth and realized that reading throughout the whole movie might not be such a bad thing.
I have no idea where to start though. Can anyone help me out and recommend some stuff? I have no language preferences, and any sort of genre preference can be overridden by the fact that if I hate it my girlfriend won't (which would really help if it's in French). Watch "The Lives of Others." It's a German film that won the best foreign language film at the Oscars. Great flick.

well, if you've seen Battle Royale, see Battle Royale 2.
and of course OLDBOY. can't not watch that. that's the epitamy of all 'foreign' that i've seen.
then again, hollywood films are 'foreign' to me, so really... 'foreign' just doesn't really count in film description, more just 'not made in america/uk/bollywood' really.
anywhos -
the Hideo Nakata 'Ring' films are 123985329325 times better than the american releases, watch those too. those are - Ring, Ring 2 and Ring 0 (zero) and in that order. the ring 0 is a prequel, about samara when she was younger. and oh so worth watching. you see WHY she is the way she is.
there's so much more in them. soooo much more. i won't spoil. the red balloon is another 'foreign favourite', as well as finfin de la tulipe (not sure if i've spelt that right. they're not my favourites, but are popular foreign favourites.
i'll post back when i think of more.

Sky Blue 2142 AD
Howl's Moving Castle
My Neighbour Totoro
Porco Rosso
(infact, all studio Ghibli Productions)
Hellsing ADV films
Neon Genesis Evangelion films
Highlander : The Search For Vengeance
Death Note
Death Note Pt 2
the death note movies are live action, based on an anime series. not as good as the anime, but still good films. better to watch the series if you can, but if not, the movies are still awesome.
that'll do for now.
i've got fuckloads of anime series, but this is about films. not series.
oh and Zinzo, how could you forget "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" if you're going to say those, don't forget CTHD. Or "Shaolin soccer"

i should break into your comp Tozzy and see whats there.lol You can look at it as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of human life, or just chalk it up to my being a sick, bloodthirsty monster. Either way, it's all the same.

all the stuff you download , you rip to cd or dvd? You can look at it as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of human life, or just chalk it up to my being a sick, bloodthirsty monster. Either way, it's all the same.

i'm a big fan of brittish cinema, they're foreign, right?
history boys, based on an actual group of overly bright young men, foul language and allusions of homosexuality do apply if you're put off by those subject, they have a magnificent variety in their verbal usage.
keeping mum...rowan atkinson as a clueless deacon with a smokin' hot daughter, a wife contemplating an affair and a peculiar housekeeper, it's a wonderfully dark comedy.
saving grace, a widow with a green thumb realizes her husband put them in debt, rather than lose the house she turns to..."growing things" to pay off the debts...another delightful comedy.
the football factory, if you're into football, european style it won't be much of a suprise, but if it's really like that, it's amazing what lengths they go to for their team...even a crack at the end poking at rugby fans.
if you liked pan's labrynth, try to find the devil's backbone, amazingly spooky ghost story by the the same gentleman,
most any asian cinema, particularly their horror...they have an asian extreme and asian extremes 3, a compilation of short movies done by some of the who's who of asian cinema. the eye and eye 2 are pretty spooky; oh and i've got the host, a monster movie i'll give a review of after we watch it.
generation x and y...jackie chan is responsible for these movies, hip, fast and wow in action, he even has a guest appearance.
i work tonight, so i'll see what else is available on the movie store shelf for foreign films. To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

but yeah i do rip all the cds and now dvds i buy, encode them, and back them up to dvd. since i can buy 100 dvds for £14 and cd wallets that fit 240 discs for £8 i tend to do that now. some albums i'll buy twice, like pendulum (cheap and worth it) but most i just back up and box up.

the host wasn't too bad for a monster movie, the story was a little cliche but the creature was really amazing and well thought out though, the characters we're kooky and the ending really didn't make much sense.
yeah, the monster was definitly the best part.
i think brotherhood of the wolf is a french movie, even more fascinating since it's based on a real situation and a mysterious beast that really did stalk the french countryside at that time.
