The old excuse - parents divorcing. Also, really small stuff like: making speechs to hundreds of people, various friendships that faltered, reading '1984' by George Orwell. I'm sure graduating will be another rite of passage. I look forward to it at least. =P

not entirely. Losing your virginity is a rite of passage, thats why we frown on 12 years old having sex.

I agree with most of this, especially the graduating part...kind of like making the decision of what to do with the rest of your life. Like for me, helping other people.

I also think, realising one day that you need to work hard to get what you want, instead of being complacent and waiting for something that might not even happen...

The Sick Rose.
O Rose, thou art sick!
The invisible worm
That flies in the night,
In the howling storm,

Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy:
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy.

As a very sheltered teenager, I had to report on The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand for a college scholarship competition. It was the first expression of an alternative sexual relationship I'd seen (though not the first I'd experienced, unofrtunately). Soon after, I read The Godfather (F-word/sex/violence) and A Clockwork Orange (getting inside the head of a miscreant), and I rented that musical about the alien transvestite that people go to drive-ins and act along with. Before reading/watching these things, I hadn't realized that, for most people, cursing and alternative sexual thoughts are normal. It took a while before I stopped getting nervous or praying or something when I bumped into a curse word in a book. Really.

They arent normal, they are still perversities, we just live ina crumbling culture where morality is suddenly taboo, and nothing is too perverse.

Makes you wonder if we'll keep getting worse or turn the corner.

So I'm not normal?

How can they not? We are still a tribal and primitive people. We cling to our small groups, which cling to larger ones. We are a barbaric and (sadly) largely uneducated species that still lives with fear, hate, malice, prejudice, discrimination and ignorance. The only difference between the "modern" people and ancient barbarians is that they were honest about it, whereas we cloak our own iniquities with courts, laws, procedures and various other silky drapes to maintain the illusion of sophistication.

Also, "morality" is a very subjective term. What we may consider "morally right" today may have been disdained as weak, or condemned as madness a millenium ago. Cultures still exist where refusing to end another's life is morally wrong. One can't apply their own personal views to everything else and consider the matter ended.

There is something to be said for formal rites of passage, and the meaning they have both for the new adult, and to those interacting with the new adult.
Becoming responsible for yourself is both empowering and invigorating. Being acknowledged as a full-fledged grown-up is something everyone should experience, because it boosts one's confidence, and being seen as responsible can increase responsible behavior. If we or others don't see us as competent to choose, and to accept the consequences of our choices, do we really experience freedom? Those are marks of adulthood; we don't expect children to make responsible choices, or freely accept the consequences of their decisions.
Oh, and that movie referred to is The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and it's one of my personal favorites!

So when you ask someone to toucha toucha touch you, you're prepared to accept the consequences, right? =-)

I agree: a sign of trust, say, in the workplace inspires me to be even more industrious and trustworthy. I've been thinking that that is why power is addictive. I work a part-time job in addition to my professional one, and the lack of autonomy allowed me in the PT one drives me crazy. I've become accustomed to a higher level of respect.

=-D Blecch. I can think of a lot of consequences I'd rather accept than the ones in that movie.
