| Men are all stupid? -
02-22-08
Have you ever noticed how men are so often portrayed on TV lately? Every single time I turn it on, there's some man with his tail between his legs, doing his wife's bidding. Or, he's doing something stupid, inconsiderate, and immature. The man is always laying around drinking beer, or out cheating on his wife, or coming up with retarded antics like Lucy used to. The woman is always working hard, taking care of the kids, and rescuing him from his dilemmas.
Is it feminism that is turning all this around? On TV, are men becoming the dingbats that women used to be?
I wonder how my daughter's view of men will be changed, seeing all this. Most male characters on TV are just dumb. The women are in power and the men never do anything to command any respect from anyone, especially not their female counterparts. If you're gonna ride my ass, at least pull my hair.

what world do you live in? .. or are you referring to certain TV shows? and if so, which ones?
Oh and I guess I should add ... do you believe this is the way also, or just that TV is full of shit?

Honestly I don't watch a lot of TV, but this seems to happen a lot in what I DO watch. Stupid movies like Shallow Hal, Knocked Up, stuff like that.
Commercials for beer, Orbitz gum, Taxes, cleaning products....
Futurama, Scrubs, Reba, Everybody Loves Raymond, That 70s Show, Home Improvement, Family Guy, Friends, The Jefferson's, Mad About You, The Simpsons, Sex and the City.... If you're gonna ride my ass, at least pull my hair.

I don't watch a whole lot of TV myself... I just don't have the time. But when I do sit down to watch something, I feel like I'm bombarded with images of men acting like assholes or the like. They are all sex-starved and irresponsible, the wives are always exasperated and sweeping up behind them. It's irritating.
Not that I don't know some men like that - they are out there. And they are much more annoying than this "trend".... but, it's surely not the norm, is it? Most of the men I know are responsible, mature MEN.
Furthermore, I don't get the sex thing. Everywhere you look, there are jokes about men (married or otherwise) complaining that they don't get enough... As if men had infinite drive and women have to be carefully persuaded. In my experience, it's always been the other way around. And I mean always. If you're gonna ride my ass, at least pull my hair.

Well I can tell you that there was a long period of my life where I can honestly say I was getting too much. I wasn't complaining mind you, but I could have done with less.

Well, I feel like I am always begging for it. When the stereotype is that men are the ones wanting to do it all the time, it is inconvenient, as a woman, to have such a drive. It's difficult not to think there's something wrong with you, etc.
All men say that they'd love to have a girl like that; they all claim to be ready at a moments notice... but as far as i can tell, it's not really true. If you're gonna ride my ass, at least pull my hair.

No, I can tell you its not true also. We all have our moments when we are just "not in the mood"... now of course with a little bit of playing around that can be quickly changed ... at least with me anyhow. I had a friend who wanted it all the time, and her bf did not. She used to complain to me all the time asking me if there is something wrong with her, if she should find another man etc etc .... I just told her no, she cannot expect every man to want sex 3X a day every day. Maybe there are some, but I doubt there are many that would want to do that for very long.

i like your position on this topic heartsicle.
what do you think about the media marketers want us to take from it? an audience of haters is still ratings in their eyes, non? i imagine that a lot of people take some sort of hedonistic pleasure at getting angry at watching "the utter shit that makes up television" -- i mean, it's really not new news that TV is full of shit, but apparently it's still something to get angry over. that's droll to me... i believe in practicing compassion.

like i said, i don't watch a lot of TV... mostly because i simply don't have time, but partly because there's not much on that entertains me.
i was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this, especially men... If you're gonna ride my ass, at least pull my hair.

Well, it all depends on what t.v. shows you are watching. A lot of the shows you mentioned are sit-coms or comedies...and writers generally go for the easiest laugh which is usually gender related and sterotyped.
But there are shows that don't sterotype men as idots...CSI, House, Monk, Law and Order, dramas and shit like that.
However, the male characters are still prone to what is thought of as "man's plight"...man vs sex drive, man vs natural elements, man vs other bigger bad ass man.
A situation where a man cheats on his wife and is caught is something a general audience can relate to so the situation is repeated in t.v. shows a lot.
These sort of regurgitated plot structures don't interest me much so I avoid the majority of television shows.
