Misconception? ........ I mean, what the hell is with that anyways, why do ppl say that "goths" are depressed? and that "goth" and depression go hand in hand? I have met a hell of alot more depressed ppl in life who don't even know what goth/gothic is. Most ppl I have met who are into the goth scene are quite happy. Yes, I know there is another thread in here about this somewhere, but its messed up... and too old

So whats with this Goth = Depressed nonsense? How did it get started?

Most people who aren't in the scene, or don't have friends that are.. will get most of their info from idiots of the infortainment industry ((aka, the news channels)). The infotainment industry cares more about shock and ratings, so any type of subculture you see on television is usually portrayed in an extreme light. Like suicides, murders, school shootings, etc... bullshit. And that's why I believe people have this natural and uneducated way of associating black or dark clothing with depression, evil, morbidness, etc....

And yes, I've known a few people who are not the per se "goth" and were horribly depressed. most of the people at the clubs I'm at are usually happy people. Why? because most are unchained from society's shackles of "fitting in" and can truly express themselves as they see fit.

agreed, I know more ppl that are depressed from shit jobs than anything else in this world....trying to fit in, be like everyone else ... and to label someone "goth" just because they wear black and are depressed is just rediculous. Hell the label is bad enough on its own ... but we won't get into that, not in this thread anyways.

It's funny to note as well that the color black is known as "strength" and "independance" in many psychic/spiritual practices.

It's because a bunch of stupid middle class teenagers picked up on it during the height of their angsty years because it was the flavor-of-the-month rebellion at the right time.

Most "goths" I know are just overly dramatic.... Or cool. One or the other.

Well, I do one 15 year old kid who seems like a bit of a poser from what I know of him but he at least acts normal and isn't insufferably pretentious. Plus he's only 15 so he should gain a proper understanding of the life-style in a few years.

yes, it is odd to sterotype goths with depression when everyone get depressed now and then and some even get seriously depressed(and the majority of them are not goths).

exactly, it's called 'life'. it's full of shitty moments, but you just hope the beautiful ones outnumber the bad.
