I guess this is a lame first post, but anyway here goes:

I tried formatting a relative's computer, (OS: Windows ME) and done so with a Windows 98 bootdisk. The problem I have is that it won't recognize the CD-ROM drive. I get that message saying about how I can edit the .sys file to cd1, 2 and so on, but after going through all 4 it still won't load.

When I tried 2, 3 and 4, they all mentioned something about it being an Atapi drive, but the proper drivers couldn't be loaded.

I know everything is hooked up inside, because it was working right before I formatted the thing.

And also, she had a 'backup' partition on there, it was drive D, and the disk drive was drive E. If that has much to do, I just thought I'd mention it.

So anyways, I know I'll look like a tool for my lack of knowldge but any help you could give would be great. Thanks.

firstly why would you go from a poor but still atleast compatible version of windows to an older worse and incompatable version?

when you format the c: drive you lose everything on it - including the drivers that make the cd drive and other addons work - unless you can find the original boot disk/restore disk, or download a copy of the driver for that cd-rom - your screwed
