| Stanley Kubrick -

Ok, at risk of sounding cliché, I LOVE his films.
In the past couple of weeks, I've seen Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, and Full Metal Jacket.
These are so different, yet all have some sort of... "Kubrick"-ness that ties them together. All among the best films I've ever seen. Bismarck once said "Fools say they like to learn from their experiences, but I prefer to learn from the experience of others."

i STILL miss stanley. of course i didnt know the man in any regard except through his films. but it hit me quite hard when i found out he died.
even though i like A.I. quite a bit as is....i would have loved to see kubrick get the chance to do it. not to mention the NAPOLEON project he was supposedly working on. *sigh* "The great thing about being ignored is that you can speak the truth with impunity."

Good lord, I'm going against the grain here and saying I didn't like Kubrick that much. He made some good films like "A Clockwork Orange", and "Full Metal Jacket" but seriously, most of his films were just....boring and long. As usual, this is just my opinion but watch "Eyes Wide Shut" and you'll see what I'm talking about. "You are a fucking ugly bitch and I want to stab you to death and play with your blood"

2001 was an amazing film, one of my all-time favorites.
Clockwork Orange looks good, but I've never seen all of it.
Full Metal Jacket... Holy crap that one... Stays with you...
But, I think my favorite Kubrick film is Spartacus. C'mon, who wasn't moved by the "I am Spartacus!" bit?
Amost enough to rekindle my faith in humanity. Almost. if I can make just nine people a day stare at me in abject horror and confusion... i think i've done my job.
there are only 10 kinds of people in the world: those that can read binary, and those that can't.
you know what? i still want a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket. (%)

He was definately gifted...
And don't forget that he had a hand in A.I., which wasn't that bad a movie either... Hey, bread is a good time for me...a-woodle-oo-doo, singing bread is a good time for EVERYbody...

Yep; he hired Spielberg as director with himself as Executive Producer. The movie could have done without the last 30 minute "happy ending."
Interesting note: the movie "A Clockwork Orange" was based on the American version of the book, which is missing the 21st chapter. Huge deal according to Burgess (in his introduction to the first American version WITH the missing chapter); he picked the number 21 as that was the time at which an individual was considered "mature" in the real world at the time, and the 21st chapter actually has Alex "growing up." Bismarck once said "Fools say they like to learn from their experiences, but I prefer to learn from the experience of others."

I don't know how close they were, really. Kubrick was notorious for "striking up a friendship" for the course of a movie, then breaking off contact.
I've not yet seen nor read Lolita (note: 'yet').
I'm interested in the Italian '120 Days of Sodom' myself. Bismarck once said "Fools say they like to learn from their experiences, but I prefer to learn from the experience of others."

Love him, or hate him, you can't deny that Stanley was a visionary. I enjoy many directors who's work has been villified by the popular press; Hooper, Fulci, Argento, Deamato... "...Lord, bring on the night. Wrap it all around me. Let it hold me tight. Soak up all that I bleed..." -Savatage- "Why don't you go practice falling down, I'll be there in a minute." -Joe Dirt "Meat's meat, and a man's gotta eat." - Farmer VIncent **WildAngelofEve is my guardian angel

Maybe being villified by the press and society at first is a prerequisite for being a visionary filmmaker.
