When it comes time to cite rock influences of the 90's, I don't think there is going to be anyone to cite. Cobain brought forth the trendy grunge/alternative scene which dominated most of the 90's. I'm hoping to god that the alternative scene will go the way of disco in the 70's... all but forgotten. I cite Cobain as an influence in the eventual destruction of rock and roll, but beyond that, he's just a stain on the wall.

i think alternative won't go the way disco did because its not bizarre enough...it gets more and more mainstream every week.
if you said that in 1990, however, when the 'new wave' section still existed............ lol

Disco was mainstream as well, equivialent to the boy bands of today. And alternative is dead. At least in my eyes. Now we have the boy and girl bands to contend with, but I have no fear that they will last very long. Mainstream Rock and roll now is definetly prefrable to rock and roll 5 years ago.

Well, as for the actual musicianship and talent of Cobain... You have to admit, he was a very aweful guitarist. Beginners learn using his songs as a start, or at least when I teach my friends to play I start out with Nirvana because there is NO skill involved. His lyrics weren't especially great either. I used to like Nirvana a bunch, but I soon found out how shitty the music actually was when I began playing the guitar. I think that his music is, or was influential for a little while in the whole grunge area, but as you can see that whole trend sort of died out not too long ago. As for being a guitar 'hero', no he won't be in my opinion because Dyshade mentioned... The heroes actually changed music, made it evolve... That, and they all had some sort of talent. This Cobain had none of. cur me non interfecit??

first off i'll admit that i didn't really read every post here but i tend to be really opinionated about kurt especially where his music is conserned. it's sounds like the usual discussion i have with my hun once in a while. but my main point is i like cobain's stuff the most because of his lyrics. the same goes for just about any other bands that i like out there. i love music period. and especialy like the way kurt wrote his lyrics and the way he sung. and unfortunately he's no longer with us.
which brings me to my next point, which i will put in ramblings.

maybe that's the trade-off. he wasn't a guitar GOD but the emotion in his music came through VERY well...and plus it sounded good...and i hate most MTV gen-X (and Y) oriented alternative bands...past and present.

there are a few people who have added to the musical genre in the nineties...... a very few..... as I said before cobain was not amongst them..... the gravely voice had been done before and much better.... power chords as well...
and his music emoted rebellion and angst.... remember the beginnings of punk.... that had been done before and also much better.... if he had added anything worth noting i may even have respected his music.... but there is nothing worth noting except that it gave someone the idea for arseface which was pretty damn funny... it is good to rehash music but damn.... come on... add something to it... i feel the same way about manson and his comical music... nothing new there that other bands have not done and done better... Well am and will always be a huge Nirvana fan.
They are just one of " those bands " ya know ?
the ones where you love every song they've ever done ?
yeah...
anyways....
Regardless of anyone elses opinion...
in mine they will always be held in the highest regards. Our culture aquires a love design. Left naked with nothing but ourselves and contempt for what we are not supposed to be, not supposed to feel, not supposed to see. I will embrace you... We are all beautiful

Yeah... kinda like Culture Club.

To hell with that. The reason you like all of nirvana's songs, is because they are all exactly the same. "OOOOOH three chords! OOOOOH he's singing about pain and hate and sex! Oh for joy, this song has the three chords played in a different order... oh my gawd hes talented!"
I think not. | |

Well i wouldn't say three chords... I have sheet music to just about every Nirvana song...
And i can't recall any of them having only three chords.
Now if we were talking about someone like The Ramones... then yes... three chords would be about right
And no... i don't like'em cause they all sound the same.
I just like them because they appeal to me musically.
As many things do.
I like alot of different music
and have respect for alot of different styles.
Cept for maybe this RAP/ROCK genre, that seems to be rather popular at the moment.
Kid Rock... Limp Bizkit.... stuff like that
I just don't like it in any aspect
But yet i can understand people liking the stuff.
Cause i myself like alot stuff that others with totally distaste Our culture aquires a love design. Left naked with nothing but ourselves and contempt for what we are not supposed to be, not supposed to feel, not supposed to see. I will embrace you... We are all beautiful

Rap/rock. Anthrax, Public Enemy, and Ice T did it so much better.

Music was fine until Cobain and Nirvana appeared. He was the sweat from a baboon's ballbag.
