Apparently American television is giving a go at remaking what my husband calls "the greatest British television show of the last 10 years".

They've cloned the plotlines and used all the same character names. And I wonder why try to redo the show? Why not just show the original? The original was quite popular on BBC America.

Anyway, don't watch this version of the show. It's piss poor compared to the original.

As an American, I can say that most shows that America "creates" based off of BBC content is far inferior to the original...

If it is set in america with the same characters and plot and style and everything, it won't work. Completely different lifestyle in the US and UK then, and now.

It gives Americans a chance to understand it without subtitles.
The amount of British shows I see on cable streamed from the US that are subtitled is incredible. Then there's shows like "ripleys believe it or not" that finds the need to subtitle anything that dosent have American accents.

Is it really that difficult to understand someone speaking the same language?

The shows aren't necessarily subtitled. It depends on whether or not someone's got the subtitles on their televisions on. We're not all idiots.

When I first moved to the Boston area I had some hell of trouble understanding the crap the blacks and gangsters were spewing out of their mouths and calling english. I thought the first guy to ask me for a smoke was asking if he could suck my cock.....

Yes I have. I must have an internal translator or something. I understand it perfectly. Come to think of it, I'm often asked by friends when watching some British shows, how the fuck I understood something everyone else thought was gibberish.

Some people thought it was quite incredible that i could understand the man with the rediculously broad west country accent in the film "hot fuzz" - the one they went to see themselves with a translator.

accents i can understand. but life on mars doesn't really contain accents, just dialect.

Maybe we all should take a road trip to deep south U.S.A. and listen to some of the locals with bad teeth, and mumble really badly. My hats off to anyone who can understand that. The accent I can understand, having been accused of having one myself, but the rest leaves you going "The fuck did he just say?!" By the way I am not a big fan of remakes of original shows, as the concept is usually slaughtered in the process, especially when coming from another country to america, and producers try to "Americanize" the show, which doesn't work well with the concept. Stick to your stupid ass sitcoms trying to portray life as a lower-middle class family.
