I can't believe that it's happened!

Jason Newstead, has left the worlds greatest band! The others say they're going to carry on with a new bassist, but who knows what the future will bring!

Such a shame, i'm gutted.

Props to Jason, the only one I had a smidgen of respect left for. Hopefully he realized how big of sellout posers they were and decided he didn't want to be a part of it.

I hope he goes with a pro-napster position, that would totaly fuck the band up. hehehehe, Im glad he left the posers. But in a way.....its a sad day when the bassist leaves the band who wrote the Black album. I mean, dumbfucks or not that was one of the best albums ever.

I never had any respect for him, mostly because Metallica probably should've ended after MOP. Not really his fault, but he still kind of bugged me. While it doesn't say exactly why he left, it sounded like he is on drugs by his statement. He said he's destroying himself or something, which is far different than "the band sucks now." I want to clear that up because I get the feeling some of you think he left because he was disgusted with how badly they sold out, which is most likely not the case.

I dont think that he left because of the band selling out, I think he left becuase lars has taken over the band when James is the only real talent. But that doesnt meen he cant have an opinion.

As for his reasons for leaving, if you think Metallica are only in it for the money, then he wouldn't have left would he! He would have frikkin well stayed and made shitloads more! His reasons are quite simple. Go to Metallica.com or MTV.com and read about it.

okay, i would definately not say that mettalic was the best band ever for one thing, the more records they spin out the worse they get. they're still alright, but the earlier stuff was definately better. oh well, they'll find another i'm sure. and if not, life goes on

So be it. That really doesn't affect me any. I have all their CD's I need and a radio station that plays their other good songs.

Its a shame that they fell so far. Metallica is the one band that has several songs that I like. Other bands may have one or two but Metallica made entire CD's great. Unfortunately after Black they never had the same feel.

Heck if it weren't for Napster I would have never heard their good songs. I guess I'm not the greatest fan so thats why I don't care but the Metallica I listen to is long gone. This travesty that exists now only disrespects the memory of what was my favorite band.

Well Metallica is not the world's greatest band, maybe the most crappy. They play for the money, not because they like it. I dont know why Jason left them, but he probably had many reasons.

Jason was the coolest in Metallica...and since he left this is bad for them...and you know what? I am happy...After '...And Justice For All' Metallica became a bunch of pussies that could deserve to be impaled for betraying their roots...

I have read all your posts and obviously a lot of you don't really care too much about MetallicA, so if that's the case back off, this is a sad time for the rest of us. Man I just couldn't believe what I am hearing, I still can't believe it. They were, and STILL ARE one of the greatest and longest running bands of all time who have throughout their musical career diversed and changed their music as they themselves grew older and changed themselves.

True, MetallicA did though. They aged and still kept the fans entertained and always kept there views open. In the zennith of their career they released S&M which was a major change but it was soooooooo cool! Unlike bands like Aerosmith, MetallicA knew how to roll with the times.

I guess now all that's left to do is wish Jason the best of luck and see what the rest of the band is going to do... who the new bassist will be... time will tell, it always does.

Now, by keeping the fans entertained, do you mean collectively pissing them off and alienating them to hopefully gain a bigger, younger market? It became fairly apparent to Metallica that thrashmetal wasn't cool amongst youngsters anymore... Almost no one under 17 wore slayer shirts these days, watered down angsty crap seemed to dominate the airwaves, so instead of sticking to what they do best, they changed. they got neat trim haircuts, dressed themselves up stylish, and began churning out radio friendly, heavy-but-not-inaccessible tracks, completely alienating their fanbase... but as we all know, the true fans are mostly 20+ year olds who all thought everything after "Master" sucked, so instead of appealing to them, they decided to cast them aside and turn to the korn kids.

Please. Aerosmith might be old and silly, but at least they know who they are.

hello, other rock bands have tried this formula before. its called the formula of not actually having to write new material and its gay. years ago rock bands were WAYYY more prolific instead of re-releasing the same shit and playing the same gay anthems LIVE over and over again.

my point being, they've already had their chance.

Metallica needs to retire, theyre rich......fuck um. if they want to keep playing they should do one free tour sponsered by napster and then fade from the light.
