is there any specific genre or specific bands that are concidered gothic/vampristic? or is it entirely personal preference? 'I speak of eyes that look, but do not see, ears that listen, but do not hear, tongues that lie, but are silent for the truth.'

Gothic is not technically a genre. Some black metal bands are considered Gothic, some industrial bands are considered Gothic... hell, some people even consider the Cure to be Gothic. Gothic music, like the concept of the Gothic lifestyle as a whole, is vague and incomprehensible.

Hell, there's even some stupid people out there who consider Marilyn Manson gothic. Whatever floats your boat, I suppose..
Since this is almost an appropriate place to post, does anyone have the lyrics to the newest released Cult song? absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Well if we want to jump back in time to the birth of the original "Goth" scene, circa 1979-1980, you'll see goths listening to bands like Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, Bauhaus, Alien Sex Fiend, .45 Grave..."classic goth" if you will. These days, I'm not really sure it matters. I suppose if you want into a scene so bad you'll adapt to anything, then discuss it with so-called goths. Personally, I listen to what I like, the hell with what everyone else likes.

Feel free to tell me I'm wrong, but those are the first that come to mind. absolute power corrupts absolutely.

2)Goth rock -modern started by Sisters Of Mercy and bands like Bolshoi and Play Dead... Later folowed by Rosetta Stone (first album), and spawned London After Midnight, Nosferatu, Garden Of Delight et cetera... Rocky, fast dark music, usially with synths... Darkwave Started By Alien Sex Fiend, then followed by Daine Lakaen, Goethes Erben and spawned Switchblade Symphony and like band... Electronic Music sometimes dancy...
4) Goth electro Bands at Nightbreed label... Dancy music with techno and rock roots... Dark of course... exs- Intra-Venus...
5) Ethereal - girlish atmospheric music... Like Love Is Colder Than Death...
6)Synth Gothic... Bands like Clan Of Xymox... Passion Noire...
Metal is Not goth!
7)Heavy Goth Rock- Dreadful Shadows, INto The Abyss, Seraphim Shock...
8_ Death Rock- Spawned by Rozz Williams and his Christian Death... Followed by Kiss The Blade, Judith, Sanguis Et Cinis...

The rest came AFTER 1980...

It's tough to tell a Gothic rock song only by listening to the music; one has to know something about the band itself. My point was that Gothic does not have an identifiable sound; it seems scattered all about.

Just a history hint | The name is one word if you please. I'm afraid that I wasn't clear enough about what I was trying to convey in my posts. Simply that the "scene" began back in 79-80. It of course continued into the early 80s and beyond. I was simply pointing out some of the core band that were listened to by people I knew who were heavily into the whole goth scene.

I think the Cults l8est offering is called Rise - could be wrong....but it sounds like anything else -
As for the goth thing these days it seems to be a fashion statement than a specific music genre.
Lets face it - Andrew Elditch (sisters) even told all the goth fans at his concert should f*ck off.......who payed his wages way back? He said they've never been goth....someone should have told Pat Morrison then
But it is getting difficult too classify goth modern goth music - bands like incubus succubus, etc still sound like the 'classic goth' but once you start doing a modern twist to it the borders get blurred. Some say Cradle of Filth is goth - even NIN.....they're great bands - but are they goth? who knows? who cares? The whole point of it is to listen to and dress how you want. Gothic Music.. in general is known as Goth Rock. This is generaly classified by slow guitar riffs and lyrics about death. Another common genre of this is Industrial/Goth music. You can find some at www.mpulse.com

I usually don't even try to categorize most of the music I listen to. If someone asks me what a particular group or album sounds like, I try to associate it with other artists or groups with a similar style, or just let the asker listen to it.
For me, music has two seperate genres: Music I like, and Music I don't.

Too right........I think he lost the plot quite a bit there
And the latest reviews from Sisters shows state that they haven't really bettered from the Floodland/Vision Thing days......
.....How about The Mission, Spear of Destiny and The Jesus and Mary Chain........They got mixed up with the Goth thing like The Cure.....but were/are they Goth? I suppose it depends on whether you define a goth group as one who plays music classified as goth, or if you define them as goth because they are listened to by people classified as goth.

**The night summons like an unquenched love, beckoning with the promise of dark desire**
**As darkness falls, night unfolds ebon wings to wrap the world in it's dark embrace**
Beauty slept and angels wept
For her immortal soul
In this repose, all evil chose
To claim her for their very own...
