right now i have an asus cusl2 mainboard running a celeron766 mgh chip. I just picked up unreal 2 and it lags like no tomorrow. i am curious if i am able to over clock it to a better speed without damaging the cpu, and if not what is the highest cpu chip i can put onto the board? The rest of my system is well over the specs for the game outside of the cpu core. any help or information would be helpful. Oh this is just to tide me over for another couple months until i am able to build a newer computer.

oh and i should have poted this. When going through the Bios the CPU frequency setting goes up to 1115MHZ
it's other this or i ask if anyone has a P3 1GHz cpu chip they want to get rid of

I checked a few websites.. They said that the CUSL2 takes the following processors
Processors
FCPGA Socket 370 for Intel Pentium III 450MHz~1+GHz and Intel Celeron 366~766+MHz
However ... this website: http://www.hardwaresite.net/cusl2.html says that over clocking is very easy. Quote: |
Outside from the small issues with the board, the CUSL2 is an amazing board with amazing stability even at high overclocks. You have a choice whether to use a jumper bank on the board or to use the SoftBIOS feature to change CPU settings, which is a plus. The only minor irks I have with this board is it's lack of a 4th DIMM slot and the position of the PSU connector on the motherboard (it's right in behind the 370 socket). All in all, I agree with most other people who used this board when they say that it is one of the best boards that they have ever used, even though it's on the expensive side.

i might have to try over clocking it since i am unable to find a 1ghz cpu chip. go figure. so again if someone has one they want to get rid of...

A sidenote: Even with the fastest CPU's, games like Unreal 2 rely heavily on video preformance. You may be better off getting a better video card. Geforce4 or Radeon 9500/9700

i have a GEforce 2 64 meg video card and this is the first game that said it needed 32 megs to my knwoledge.

the memory wouldn't really matter I would think. A GEforce 4 with 64 MB would probably be 1000% faster than a GeForce 2 64 MB | |

The GeForce 4 card has more steps of a graphical construction of a 3D enviorment rendered by hardware instead of software. Therefor, in complex 3D enviorments, it's preformance will be a LOT better. And Unreal 2 is such a complex enviorment.
Other graphics cards to look into (in order of preformance, best last):
GeForce 4 Ti 4200
GeForce 4 Ti 4600
Radeon 9500 (Pro)
Radeon 9700 (Pro)
GeForce FX
Radeon 9900 (Pro)

Pro version is higher clocked then the standard, resulting in better preformance. I'm not sure, but I think the pro is about 20-30% faster then the standard. But seeing the pro being LOTS more expensive then the standard, the choice is easy for a budget machine...

i used to run ut2k3 (knows it is not unreal 2, but it isn;t out yet here..whines) on my gf2 mx 64 mb, and i could run it with low level graphics
now i have the gf4 ti4200 @4600 it runs as smooth as greased chicken with the highest video settings.....and the processor stayed the same

got ut2k3 to run on a p2 400 with 128 mb  , and no oc'ing
