So I got into a band a little while back. I'm the singer. Its a heavy metal alternative band.

First Problem: how do you write music that doesnt sound like a socially handicapped reprobate whining about the fact that life is crap?

I mean, we could sing punk rock, but I'd rather use my extensive singing talent for something that sounds good and means something, not something that caters to a generation of brainless yuppie larvae who want what is pre-prescribed, what is fabricated, what is artificial, and what is synthetic, but not the stuff that forces them to think, to take a fresh look at things, maybe something for them to relate to.

So what do the other songwriters/singers etc on this site do when they need to write something that sounds good (maybe a bit angry and vengeful, think Linkin Park or Metallica) but not angsty (ie: Stabbing Westward, silverchairs later stuff)?

Any help'll be appreciated, thanks.

Start listening to good music and work your way up from there.

first... if you think that linkin parks' music is deep and thougtful you have another thing coming. you shouldn't be asking people for advice like this, because you have to right what you think and feel, not what someone else tells you or what you think people will be impressed by. also, the dumbest people i know listen to linkin park and metallica. some of my most intelligent friends listen to punk. i'm a singer/songwriter.. and i'll tell you that i sit down and write whatever comes to mind. be it lame or intelligent it doesnt matter. you need to get into the rythym of writing itself, and worry about content later. the goal is to be able to write. then you can concentrate on finding a voice, a topic, whatever. don't let other bands influence you, lol, especially linkin park! -)

And let me listen to and like what I want to, and not what YOU think is cool. I respect that you may not like LP and Metallica, but that doesnt mean you have to push your opinion on others. Oh, and calling me dumb, is quite possibly as far from the truth as you are ever going to get. I'm one of the most intelligent people you may ever meet, I just don't tap the full power of my intellect. I don't know why this is, it just is. Oh, and that is me singing with my band up there in that pic, however the person who took the pic didnt get the band in it!! Which is not good, but meh...

well every song bears a message if you choose one that is close to yourself, you can probably write some inspired lyrics. But likely it will be some time before you write something decent.

linkin park lyrics are as deep tought as my last 30 min at work. however, writing is about what influences you, not what everyone else is singing about. if you are playing mostly pissed off music then those lyrics will follow. what ever you do, write about what affects you. write some pissed off song on how some internet junkies don't like linkin park.

First, don't ask for an opinion or advice and get pissed off when you get it. Noone's forcing you to listen or not listen to anything, but please peruse these boards before posting something. Citing as a major influence Metallica and ESPECIALLY Linkin park around here is just asking for trouble. Whether that's the way it should be or not is irrelevant; that's just the way it is. Despite being a mod I can't really control these people nor would I really want to. As long as the personal attacks aren't TOO bad I just chuckle and let it slide, so I really would suggest not inviting a shit-storm. I've watched the people on these boards tear people up really bad, and truthfully, getting all petulant and bitchy is only gonna make them hound you even more. We don't like Linkin park or Metallica, and we don't care about how intelligent you are. Nothing you say to the contrary is going to convince anyone, either, so just drop that little bit.

Take this whatever way you will, I'm pretty sure you'll get pissed about it, too, but *shrug*.

I'm sorry but I just don't accept that. I'm not going to keep my mouth shut just because the members of the forum don't like the same music I do. Why is it asking for trouble? Because theres alot of people here who are self-righteously over-opinionated?

I don't give a shit if my likes and interests hit nerves and butt heads with other people. They are MY likes and interests, so no-one has any right to tell me otherwise. How is it that I can respect the fact that someone else likes something I don't, but for the entirety of my life, I've been forced to keep my trap shut if what I like doesn't fit with the majority's views?

If you want to be closed-minded, fine. Just don't expect me to roll over and die so easily.

I dunno, i think you should be pointing that there finger at yourself mister man. I've always considered reactions like a violently sized "stfu" to be a bit on the closed minded and infantile side.

Seriously, i don't think the message you reacted to was very insulting at all, infact i thought, like you said, that they were just trying to express their views and feelings. They weren't being hostile.

But seriously, if you're writing lyrics don't set out to write like this band or that band. write what comes to you naturally, write about things you know, and you'll get better with experience. and don't trash something because you think it sounds bad, hold onto it, everything can be revised.

and on a side note i wouldn't recomend getting hostile with any of the moderators on this board. it doesn't lend well to your popularity here or for that matter your permanence if you get my drift...

The choice is pretty simple. I'm 20. I have more than a few things to say. I can either do it constructively in an enlightened fashion, or I can cater to the masses of 14 year olds and do it so that it sounds like "she ripped out my heart and left a hole in me" which quite frankly always makes me go o_0 ??? I'd rather like what I'm singing rather than take the "easy path to fame".So what if no-one likes what I have to say (people are always telling me I think too much, that I'm way too opinionated for a 20 year old, [just because I don't always talk about cars or get into fights, and because I'm smarter than the average 20 year old])

And sorry if I pissed anyone off. Kind of had a bad week.
