I'm so addicted. I watch it everytime it's on. Which is every day. Please someone out there tell me they dig this show too.

It's bad. The other day I got all excited because they were some place in England, and a lot of the crap was older than a lot of the crap on the shows from here.

Tonight some guy had an illistration (large, portrait size)... can't recall who.... 1950's... Illustrated magazine covers and stamps.... anyway, it was worth $40,000. This chick had this huge ornate sideboard thing she paid $19,000 for... it was worth $50,000. meh, so addicted.

Only thing is though, something might be worth $50,000 but you'll never find anyone that will pay that. We just had a show where stuff was appraised by someone "in the know" and then later appraised by dealers - the kind you find at every suburb. They offered around 20% of what the stuff was worth. I think it's a bit false hope these shows.

And don't they have to pay a bit of money to get it appraised in the first place?

That's because first you need an insurance value. Then, if you do want to sell it off, you need to take it to auction. The right kind of auction, with the right kind of people there looking to buy what you specifically have.

its an interesting show often enough...

not really a big fan of it..but i generally have to sit through it because of my gran, it can be pretty interesting sometimes though.

Oh right. Insurance is a weird thing though right? Like I a house full of paintings, I have sold some before, but waiting for my next exhibitions, if I were to get them insured for some stupid amount...how can I prove what they are worth? Is it based on what I've sold them for in the past?

I had a stupid friend that bought a car off her brother for $500 it was worth $5000 and she insured it for what she bought it for. Yes, it got stolen...

I can't say that I'm a big fan of the Antiques Roadshow, but I have to admit that it can be quite amusing when you see some dried up old granny desperate to hear that her china tea set is worth a fortune, only to be told that it's barely worth the plastic bag she brought it in!
