this is going to be tough to explain

I suffer from a bit of depresion and my boyfriend wants me to get help and I want to as well but I'm afraid to because of my parents. Yesterday I had a breakdown at a friends house because of everyone poking fun at me and being plain rude. Now my boyfriend wants me to get help moreso then ever and if I don't he has claimed he will leave me but I don't want him to but at the same time I'm afraid of my parents, does anyone have any advice?

What do you think your parents would say or do if you,for instance,went for counselling?Is there a way of doing it without their knowing,for instance seeing a school or college counsellor?I know a lot of them have one nowdays,and that way you wouldn't have to pay a therapist privately.

I don't know the details regarding your boyfriend;maybe he genuinely is having trouble coping with the situation,or maybe he's trying to shock you into getting the help by threatening to go.I can see why you're afraid of him leaving,and why that's an extra motivation to get help,but ultimately you have to do this for you.

I'm not clear on what happened at your friend's house;was it friends who were being rude and mean to you,or did you go there after your family did?

Try to get help hun, you have made the first step in sayng you want help.
Go to a school counseller (if you are at school) or college.
I don't know how old you are or where you live so I don't know if counsellers are obliged to inform your parents or not..but if they aren't you can go without them knowing.

Thanks for the help, I shall try to go to one of my schools concelers and try to get the nerve to get some meds although that would involve my parents. Thanks once again

If you can get through it without pills I would suggest trying hun.
I am not a great believer in pills that claim to cure depression....I think you have to remove the cause of it...not just alieviate the symptoms.

I must say, i have to agree with this

I would agree with Silver... and be very careful to inform ANY doctor of EVERYTHING going on in your life... misdiagnosis of depression is common, and once on the medication, your body chemistry is drastically altered...

you're parents may be more understanding than you'd expect...if anything they would blame themselves, but with all the information coming forth about clinical depression, a youth trying to adjust in the world..it's almost expected for teenagers to have a difficult time...They will ultimately be more concerned for your well being than having to watch you go through something they don't know about

Im sure if your depressed...they've noticed.

People want me to get "help"..today my mom found i attempted suicide...and she said i have to get committed.Two of my boyfriends left me due tothem feeling i pushed them away.


Talk to your parents.
You'll hvae to try a variety of pills...it takes time.

I've tried conceling before, my mother found out, she wasn't to pleased to say the least, said I should just suck it up and go on with my lif, forget about having depresion, said it was my likes and hobbies making me sad.

That isnt right...my mother forces me to get help.I refuse,not denial i know i need help.enclosing your neck tightly with a rope...until your eyes turn red is a sign of depression and slit wrist.

if it didnt please her when she took you to the councelor then maybe it wont please her when you end up in a phsyciatric ward...

If you really do have a problem, then seek counseling like the others have suggested..
be wary of highschool counselors if you are at that lvl and in the U S.. Also be wary of priests(although i do not regard religion as a bad thing), for they have another agenda altogether..
Parents do love and tend to get over-zealous in trying to help..

Gotta agree with the general idea here.

1. Get the depression treated by someone who knows what they're doing.

2. Don't jump right to meds. Meds are great if you have chronic chemical depression.... But they don't help and can hurt if you're not working the other issues of the depression.

that's definitely true about clinical depression. i think its selfish of your parents to regard how you're feel as teenage blues...it would probably be a good idea to go to a professional and get evaluated for depression.

hint: a sign of clinical depression (and believe me, i'm not an expert on this) is being depressed continuosly for at minimum of two weeks. (just don't quote me on this)

get professional help by a counselor. Your boyfriend tried to scare you into getting help probably because he loves you.

counselling usually starts with a lot of talking.. how you developed your depression, how you feel towards life, etc. talking helps. just talk to someone who knows his job. If you don't want the guy to talk to your parents about your problems, he won't. everything you tell him is between you and him only.

myself, I went through depression on my own. It took me 3 years to overcome a severe depression (seriously considered suicide multiple times per day, didn't go out a lot, got lost in a sea of self-pity and incredible sadness... etc etc). Love cured me .

Now it's just up to finding a good conceler, my old one was rude and my school has none. Thank you verry much for the suport though
