AH!!! My speciality!!!
Okay so you can buy a "Singer but the big problem with those is the fact that the parts cost alot of money, they do however come industrial and they are as hard as nails, you don't really want to buy a conventional sewing machine, those break easily...
OR! You can try out one of those digital sewing machunes but I advise against that because they are far far far! Too complicated and you would only wind up confusing yourself although they are great for embroidery if you know how to fiddle with the buttons and such... Bothe the digital and the Singer makes are a little pricey but you get what you pay for I guess.
You can buy a surger but those things are even more expensive than the singer and the didgital sewing machines (you can get a cheap one but like I said, you get what you pay for and unfortunately a cheap surger = bad shit)
I own a "White" sewing machine and the best thing about it is the fact that it has a surger attachment and surger components which means I can use it as a sewing machine or I can ajust the dial and snap on my surger piece so I can use it that way. Its also industrial which means its stronger than a conventional sewing machine and the foot is easier to ajust to acompany the different needle settings (Which basically means I don't need a spacific foot for a spacific needle) and it has a load of free componants so if anything breaks, I can just replace it without going out and buying a shitload of parts. Its also easier to thread and the instructions are really easy to follow.
The only downside I really see with mine is the ajusting, it takes a little bit of fiddling to get the right setting for my surger attachment, if I want to surge stretchy material I have to use the wide setting and theres about five other settings for the surger which Im not sure about, good thing though is that I can stick to what I know best and what setting Im comfortable with so I really don't need to piss about with all the other settings till I want to experiment.
I guess it depends on how serious you are with the clothes making or whatever. Im really serious about it so I have a really good sewing machine/surger but mine was a rare find and my friend bought me it for my birthday last year, a real bargin too.
Hope I have been a little help to you.
